The 5 Characteristics of an Authority Website By Howie Jacobson, ETR

Google loves "authority" websites - sites that provide valuable information, and don't just try to sell stuff. And to show their love, Google rewards authority sites with high search engine rankings and lower cost-per-click AdWords keywords.

Sound good?

If you're ready to be an authority in your industry, here are the five major characteristics your website should have:

1. High-Quality Content - good, useful material
2. A Large Quantity of Content - lots of pages
3. A High Frequency of Updates - so Google sees the site is always growing and staying current
4. User-Friendly, Intuitive Navigation - with many helpful links
5. A Good Reputation - as determined by other authority sites linking to yours

The easiest way to create an authority website is by blogging. In fact, my entire AskHowie site was constructed as a Wordpress blog. (It was free, except for some design of the header and some custom hand-holding - er, programming for special features.)

Porn Downloads Strain Japan Phone Network, Prompt DoCoMo Curbs
Share | Email | Print | A A A
By Masaki Kondo and Rocky Swift

July 6 (Bloomberg) -- Takeshi says he pays 6,300 yen ($66) a month to NTT DoCoMo Inc. for unlimited Internet access, allowing him to download adult movies on his mobile phone.

“A mobile is far handier than a computer for Internet access -- I seldom use a PC outside the office,” said Tokyo travel agent Takeshi, 32, who declined to give his surname.

Takeshi and other pornography fans are feeding a surge in demand for movie downloads in Japan, home to the world’s first third-generation wireless network. While profiting from the traffic, Tokyo-based mobile carriers DoCoMo and KDDI Corp. say they’ve been forced to impose limits on the heaviest users as the $74 billion network feels the strain.

Google announces Chrome OS, coming to netbooks second half of 2010
by Ross Miller, posted Jul 8th 2009 at 12:59AM

We can't believe it's actually here. After hearing whispers of a Google OS for ages now, the company's now gone official with its plans. According to the official developer blog, it'll be an open source platform that can "power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems," and will be capable of running on x86 (that includes Intel Atom) and ARM chips. Addressing potential overlap with Android-based netbooks, the official line is that "choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google." A large portion of its fresh out of beta Google Apps suite already supports an offline mode, so it looks like the groundwork's already laid out. The company says it's currently working with a number of OEM manufacturers and that it'll appear on a number of netbooks coming to market sometime in the second half of 2010.

US GOVT WEBSITES UNDER ATTACK
Cyber attack into 4th day

WASHINGTON - THE US State Department said on Thursday its website came under cyber attack for a fourth day running as it tried to prevent further attacks.

'I'm just going to speak about our website, the state.gov website. There's not a high volume of attacks. But we're still concerned about it. They are continuing,' State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters.

'We are taking measures to deal with this and any potential new attacks,' Mr Kelly added.

According to computer security experts, a dozen US government websites, including those of the White House, Pentagon and State Department, were targeted in a coordinated cyber attack which also struck sites in South Korea.

South Korean lawmakers were quoted as saying on Wednesday that South Korea's intelligence service believes North Korea or its sympathisers may have staged the attack.

But Mr Kelly added: 'I have no information... of North Korean involvement. I have... nothing that I can confirm.' He said that the site based at the US embassy in Seoul, South Korea was not shut down and was not materially affected by any of these attacks.

Mr Kelly has said the US computer emergency readiness team is working with State Department experts, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other government agencies to try to resolve the problem.

DHS is leading the probe, Mr Kelly said.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed earlier that US government and private sector websites had come under so-called 'distributed denial of service' attack but declined to identify any of the targeted sites.

A denial of service attack attempts to paralyze a website by flooding it with traffic from an army of malware-infected computers known as a 'botnet.' -- AFP
