Is it wrong to drive safely?
Baidu’s thousands of self-driving taxis competed for market in Wuhan and were complained of driving too slowly

<Research>Nomura Lowers Baidu (BIDU.US) TP to US$130; More Proactive Return of Capital Needed

Baidu (BIDU.US)'s advertising business is predicted to remain weak in 2Q24, with the group's core advertising revenue expected to decline 3% YoY to RMB19 billion.

Revenue from the group's cloud business may rise 14% YoY to RMB5.1 billion, up from 12% YoY growth in 1Q.

The broker said Baidu needs to be more proactive in its return on capital.

With rising cash reserves and a declining valuation, the broker maintained its Buy rating but lowered its US target price to US$130 from US$144.

Nomura assessed that Baidu is trying to market its AI-enabled solutions to enterprise customers, but China's AI industry as a whole lacks attractive commercial applications to motivate companies to use them.

As a result, some Chinese AI companies have had to resort to price wars to make sales.

The broker expected Baidu's core revenue to be flat YoY at RMB26.4 billion in 2Q.

<Research>Macquarie Cuts TP of BIDU-SW (09888.HK) to HK$103; Core Ads Biz Under Pressure in 2Q24

Macquarie wrote in a report that it is now taking a conservative view on the core advertising performance of BIDU-SW (09888.HK) , with core revenue for 2Q24 expected to be flat YoY at around RMB26.4 billion, taking into account the unstable macro-economy, shrinking advertising budgets in major industries, and advertisers switching to investing their budgets in new channels such as Douyin and Xiaohongshu.

According to the report, BIDU has recently started to accelerate the development of its artificial intelligence business and launched consumer-oriented advertising products, which is expected to enhance its long-term competitiveness.

However, as the transformation is still at an early stage, it may further drag down the performance of its advertising business in the short term.

The broker accordingly lowered its 2Q24 adjusted net profit forecast on BIDU to RMB6.1 billion.

Although Apollo Go, BIDU's Robotaxi business, has been growing steadily, Macquarie excluded it from its valuation as it is relatively small and the financial impact is believed to be minimal.

The broker cut its EPS forecasts on BIDU for this year and next year by 4% and 6% and reduced its target price to HK$103.

Nevertheless, the broker is still looking forward to the long-term growth momentum brought by generative AI.

<Research>HSBC Global Research Cuts BIDU-SW (09888.HK) TP to $113.1; Ads Biz Recovery Takes Time

HSBC Global Research commented in a report that outlook for the advertising business of BIDU-SW (09888.HK) (BIDU.US) remained challenging in the near term due to weak macro market sentiment and a reduction in search advertising inventory as BIDU continues to integrate AI capabilities into its search function.

The broker lowered its 2024-2026 forecast for BIDU's core advertising revenue by 3-4% and its overall revenue by 1-2%.

Assuming a 3% YoY decline in the group's advertising revenue in both 2Q24 and 3Q24, core advertising revenue for the full year is expected to show a slight negative growth.

While the broker took a constructive view on recent regulatory developments regarding autonomous driving, it did not see a significant contribution from the self-driving taxi business in the near term.

HSBC lowered BIDU's US share target price from US$145 to US$116, as well as its H-share target price from HK$141.4 to HK$113.1, with the Buy rating maintained.

Near-term catalysts included the potential increase in shareholder return yields and improved advertising prospects.

<Research>UBS Chops BIDU-SW (09888.HK) TP to $146 as Ad Biz Continues to be Pressured in Short Term

UBS released a research report chopping its target price for BIDU-SW (09888.HK) from $161 to $146, with rating kept at Buy.

UBS remained cautious on its short-term core growth, and expected its 2Q24 core advertising revenue to fall by 3% YoY, mainly due to the weakening macro-economy, a high base in the same period of 2023 and the need to continue to develop its AI-powered search function.

Related News: TF Securities: BIDU-SW ST Rev. May be Pressed by AI Upgrade, Rating Kept Buy

UBS believed that the slowdown in China's economic activity will have an impact on BIDU-SW's advertising business.

In addition, AI-powered search has yet to monetize and is temporarily affecting core advertising growth, which is believed to continue into 3Q24 before improving in 4Q24.
