Reports Say Chinese Brokers Tighten Reviews for Account Openings, Margin Financing and Short-selling Transactions
Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that Chinese brokers are tightening scrutiny on new account openings and strengthening reviews of margin financing, short-selling and options trading, as regulators move to curb excessive high-risk trading following a sharp market correction.
It was reported that a number of mainland Chinese brokers, including CITIC SEC (06030.HK) and East Money, have recently raised compliance requirements for clients seeking leveraged or derivatives trading.
At the same time, stricter reviews are being conducted on clients' financial conditions, trading experience and risk tolerance before approving margin or options accounts.
Multiple brokers have also stipulated that investors who opened new accounts within the past six months or frequently received margin calls will face restrictions on further borrowing.
The report cited brokers as saying that, amid heightened market volatility, a growing number of retail investors were forced to liquidate positions since late July.
China's outstanding margin financing and securities lending balance, after surpassing RMB3 trillion in late June, fell to RMB2.6 trillion by the end of July.
In 1H26, investors opened a combined 960,700 new margin accounts, up 60% YoY.
In June alone, the number of new accounts reached 179,000, representing YoY growth of 77%.
