BlackRock Sees Recession Coming, Offers View on Stocks

'Central banks [are] pushing policy rates up to levels that damage economic activity,' BlackRock said.

by DAN WEIL

We are seeing a new regime “play out in persistent inflation and output volatility, in central banks pushing policy rates up to levels that damage economic activity, rising bond yields and ongoing pressure on risk assets”.

“Central bankers won’t ride to the rescue when growth slows in this new regime, contrary to what investors have come to expect. They are deliberately causing recessions by overtightening policy to try to rein in inflation. That makes recession foretold”.

“We see central banks eventually backing off from rate hikes [next year], as the economic damage becomes reality. We expect inflation to cool but stay persistently higher than central bank targets of 2%”.

“Job losses should be most concentrated in the technology and real estate sectors, which were among the strongest beneficiaries of the zero-rate environment.”

“By 2024, the U.S. economy may well be back on a path that looks much like that of the late 2010s -- slow growth, low inflation, moderate interest rates and strong corporate margins.”

Retail sales declined 0.6% in November

That’s significantly worse than the Dow Jones estimate of a 0.3% drop.

The pullback was widespread across categories

Furniture and home furnishings stores reported a decrease of 2.6%, building materials and garden centers were off 2.5% and motor vehicle and parts dealers dropped 2.3%.

Even with declining gas prices, service stations sales were down just 0.1%.

Online sales also decreased, falling 0.9%, while bars and restaurants increased 0.9% and food and beverage stores rose 0.8%.

The health of the U.S. consumer continues to erode

Personal loans and credit card debt reached record levels in 2022 due to financial pressures brought on by high inflation and climbing interest rates, according to third-quarter data from a consumer credit reporting agency.

Credit balances reached a record-setting $866 billion in the third quarter of last year – and they are expected to keep climbing, the report from TransUnion said.

As you might expect, higher credit card balances are translating into increased credit card delinquency rates.

As you can see in the chart below dating back to 1992, credit card delinquency rates plummeted in the pandemic. So, we’re coming off historic lows. But notice the sharp angle of the uptick in delinquencies – that’s the problem.
