That’s how much cryptocurrency has been stolen by scammers this year, according to Chainalysis’s new 2021 Crypto Crime Report.

The amount is up 81% from 2020 and particularly driven by the emergence of “rug pulls”—a type of scam in which the developers of a new crypto project (usually a new token) abandon it unexpectedly and abscond with users’ funds.

What is a honeypot crypto scam?

They aim to trick their victims into falling into traps by sending out contracts that appear to be vulnerable but contain hidden traps.

Honeypots are a term used to describe this unique sort of contract.

Honeypots are smart contracts that appear to have a design issue that allows an arbitrary user to drain Ether (Ethereum's native currency) from the contract, if the user sends a particular quantity of Ether to the contract beforehand.

However, when the user tries to exploit this apparent flaw, a trapdoor opens a second, yet unknown, preventing the ether draining from succeeding.

Crypto crime just hit an all-time high of $14 billion

Total crypto total transaction volume grew to $15.8 trillion in 2021, up 567% from the previous year.

Tthe rise of DeFi, or decentralized finance, has led to more criminals taking advantage of people who are lured by the hype surrounding crypto.

Chainalysis estimates that about $7.8 billion of the overall $14 billion worth of criminal activity is from scams.
