US to tighten noose on crypto trade

Financial authorities in the United States are signaling a more active role in regulating the US$1.5 trillion (HK$11.7 trillion) cryptocurrency market, Financial Times reported.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Michael Hsu, who was installed this month as acting comptroller of the currency, said he hoped US officials would work together to set a "regulatory perimeter" for cryptocurrencies.

China’s crackdown

Crypto assets and stocks are taking a beating as concerns about China's crackdown grow.

Bitcoin slumped to below US$33,000 and Ether fell below US$2,000.

China ordered Alipay and banks to not provide services linked to trading virtual currencies.

The measures go further than expected, crypto derivatives exchange FTX said.

Bitcoin has now formed a "death cross," with its average price over the last 50 days dropping below that of its 200-day moving average.

The indicator is typically seen as a closely watched technical measure that could offer a hint at more pain to come.
