JAL to cut 16,500 jobs

TOKYO - - Japan Airlines Corp plans to reduce its workforce by a third within the fiscal year to lower labor costs by 81.7 billion yen (US$865.41 million) a year, the Nikkei business daily said.

The restructuring proposal compiled by the carrier and the state-backed Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corp of Japan (ETIC) suggests to cut 16,500 jobs.

The proposed cuts include 5,405 workers from cargo and other peripheral operations, 2,460 flight attendants, 2,043 sales representatives and 775 pilots. Staffing at Kansai International Airport and Central Japan International Airport will be slashed 70 per cent to 642 employees, reflecting reduced flight schedules, the Nikkei added.

Japan Airlines is currently soliciting 2,700 volunteers for early retirement, with two more rounds slated in the coming months, the newspaper said.

The airline had planned to cut 15,700 jobs over three years under the rehabilitation plan submitted with its bankruptcy filing in January. But operating losses of up to 1 billion yen a day have forced the faster restructuring, the Nikkei said.

With a June deadline for issuing an overhauled business plan, Japan Airlines and ETIC saw the need to quickly trim payroll in tandem with paring routes and selling older aircraft. Charting a swift path to profitability is seen helping garner the support of lenders, the newspaper added. -- REUTERS

23 Airlines Stocks to Buy and Sell - UAUA, LCC, LUV, CEA, ZNH

April 20, 2010

By Louis Navellier, Editor, Blue Chip Growth

The airline industry has seen quite a shake-up in recent weeks. First, United Airlines (UAUA) and US Air (LCC) entered airline merger talks ... again. Then the eruption of an Iceland volcano crippled the skies over Europe. And by the way, consumer spending is still taking a toll on carriers while all this is going on.

So how can you make sense of this mess in the airline industry? Are there actually any airline stocks to buy right now?

There's a big chance of another volcano eruption, with ashes much greater than the one last week.

I'm not talking 2012 stuff. I'm talking about the eruption of Mount Katla. Some info below:-

Risk of Katla: Could 2nd Icelandic Volcano Eruption Follow?

The eruptions of the comparatively small Eyjafjallajökull glacier volcano in Iceland have historically preceded massive eruptions by the more feared Mount Katla. Experts are concerned that the present volcanic eruption could trigger activity at Mount Katla, which is potentially much more dangerous.

Its last major eruption was in 1918. Icelandic volcanologists consider it plausible that Katla may erupt, and that is why they are monitoring Katla very closely right now.

There are eruption channels between Eyjafjallajökull and Katla and magma could shoot into the Katla volcano. Katla might only need a nudge. Effects of Katla's eruption would put the present air travel chaos in the shade, inflicting much greater economic losses upon Europe. Deposits from the ash cloud formed by Katla when it erupted spectacularly in 1755 can still be found in peat bogs in Shetland and other parts of northern Europe.
