I would tear up my 'wig' (according to MM's hairless joke) if I have to write a report after every tuition lesson

just ease up

Right on. Having a little pot of $$ helps. I always think confident parents bring up confident children.
But that UOB parent obviously lack something, other than $$.

I just think that the parents are either too kiasu.. or too crazy about grades and think that just paying the tutor you can order him to do anything at all. Seow ar :D

Both the Mrs. and I don't believe in tuition.

La Pap, if there are more parents like us, jialat liao.. :P... but luckily we are in the super minority :D

As long as the kid has average intelligence and willing to work hard, he/she will do well. The amount of work from the schools is already overburdening our children, killing their childhood. I feel sorry for Singaporean kids with super kiasu parents.

Both our parents were illiterate (from super blue collar background :P). But the Mrs. graduated at the top of her school while I managed to get a scholarship to study engineering, all the while helping my mum sell food stuff on the streets of Singapore at 4am in the morning on weekends and helping to prep the stuff before going to school each weekday. The good thing about my dad was that he just looks at my report book when I was in Primary school and if there wasn't a single red mark, he would just sign it off.. haha.. lucky la.. :P

It's because of our personal experience that we strongly believe that kids will turn out just fine, if the parents allow them room to grow and develop.

MM, always good to hear of stories where people triumph over adversity. This shows the strength of the human spirit! Kudos!

As a new parent myself, I often wonder what kind of parent I will be. Will I make the same mistakes which my parents did? Or can I avoid them somehow? Probably I will make "new" mistakes as well. All I want is for my kid to get a good childhood, education and not feel too stressed by our society. I also intensely dislike the pervasive materialism and consumerism culture as depicted by our newspaper and society.

Hee hee, actually I also don't believe in tuition. I don't have any in my school life (parents can't afford, so die die have to study myself). In an ideal situation, where I have infinite time with any one kid, i'll ask him/her to teach me instead. Teaching is the fastest way to learn something.

Hope I won't be those kiasu parents too. Need to learn from mm on this :)

lapap : i think you wont have to worry about it... we usually behave in the similar way our parents treated us... so, if you never took tuition during school days, then you probably wont give your future kid/s any...

me too... never had to take tuition classes... and so, i don't believe in them now too... 8-) but i wont repeat this for your sake...hahaha...

What is the fine line that every educated person should carefully tread?

Just as the rivers have their sources in the Ocean, education has its roots in Educare.

Physical and worldly knowledge corresponds to education. Educare is related to our inner feelings and purity of heart. Our Speech, Song and Way of Life should originate from heart. That is the essence of Educare.

Even if you acquire any number of degrees, if you lack purity of heart, you cannot be called truly educated. You must understand the purpose of education and act accordingly. Then your life will be redeemed.

la pap, I hope you planned to go. To see human body as works of art breaks the taboo of death. I remembered doing alot of my thinking in that 2 hrs sessions... A lot of thoughts..

Some prefer to bring children as part of general education. Do bring passion card for discounts.

oh really? i've always thought that some rivers have their sources from melted ice on or accumulated rainfall from mountain tops...

This is probably the most comical news I have read today. If you cannot even stand on your own two feet when you are an undergrad, what hope do you have in the real world???

Even undergrads get tuition
By Terrence Voon
When Ms Jean Phua began attending classes in business finance earlier this year, she found she could not keep up.

Desperate for help, the 23-year-old - who was then pursuing a bachelor's degree in marketing at SIM University - turned to a time-honoured Singapore tradition: tuition.

After a three-week crash course in the subject from a private tutor, she scored a credit and graduated last month.

Wished I had that option :p
