I have heard of HR managers who will use obesity as a gauge.

The logic is, if you can't take care of your body...how can I entrust the company's job to you. In a certain way, it make some sense.

After all, HR (or any hiring managers) does have a challenge to look beyond what's written on the resume, dont' they?

Of course, this could open a can of worms....is that a discrimination?

Singapore - Economic Data & News (Feb 09 - Aug 09)

Postby millionairemind » Fri Jul 10, 2009 9:18 pm

Came across this piece of news.... sad... cos' ageism is alive and well in Singapore.

But I re-read it again. He was paid $15K a month as a fund mgr, surely he would have saved a bundle by now to start his own investment firm?? Or maybe just invest his own money to make a living?? he is asking for $3K a month, which is only $36K a year.... how difficult it is to make 36K a year if you have a good bundle of money stocked away and was a good fund mgr...

Strange.....

Unemployed man willing to reduce pay by 80%
He used to earn a five-figure monthly salary, but no one is willing to hire him now even though he is willing to settle for S$3,000 a month.

Mr Roland Ang, 52, told Shin Min Daily that he used to manage a hedge fund in an investment firm, but lost his job when his company folded last November.

He joined the finance department of a bank after serving national service, and worked his way up from an administrative assistant to department head, but his highest educational qualification stops at secondary school.

He also says that he was headhunted four times in the nineties, and commanded a pay of about $15,000 a month, not including annual bonuses. But he finds it hard, if not impossible to find a job now.

He and his wife have three children aged eight to 16, and they are also taking care of his 90-year-old mother.

Sends out 20-30 applications a month

Mr Roland Ang has been actively seeking employment, and sends out 20 to 30 job applications a month on average. He says he went for two interviews a month but was always unsuccessful.

He thinks that it is his lack of educational qualifications and age that is deterring employers.

"When they see that I have no university degree, they say they will contact me again but they never do. Even when I indicate that I am willing to lower my salary expectations to only S$3,000, which is the starting pay of a fresh grad.

"They say that I have too much experience. I don't understand, why don't companies want to employ an experienced staff who is willing to work for less pay? Isn't that a good thing? So I think that my age is a factor."

HR expert says...

Mr David Ang, Executive Director of the Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI) told Shin Min daily that employers should not view age and educational qualifications as critical factors when hiring.

He pointed out that they should give older workers a chance, meet them face to face to find out if their experience and skills are relevant before making a decision.

He also says that he empathises with Mr Ang's plight, but feels that offering to lower his pay does not help as companies generally pay according to the position and whether the applicant is willing to lower his expectations is not a factor in their hiring decision.

He also noted that Mr Ang may not have angled his resume and job applications to suit the requirements of the jobs he applied for.

"Companies receive a lot of job applications, if your resume does not have have any factor that captures the attention of the employer, it will be overlooked, so job seekers should customise each application to the job they are applying for."

He added that older job seekers who have ample experience, should not be discouraged although they may face rejection during the process of looking for a job, because employers who recognise their ability will hire them.

Actually, the article did not state very clearly his role in the hedge fund company.

Is it a finance role (as in Accounting??), an Operations Manager etc?

But, then again..... many people who used to make good money are only able to do so...because it is not their own money.... and the risk is not 100% theirs.

It is a different ball game when you need to make it happen using your own money :)

52?? sorry ba...too old...asking for $3000....a company can easily find a bright chap of 28 for this same salary but more energetic and passionate...

He also says that he was headhunted four times in the nineties, and commanded a pay of about $15,000 a month, not including annual bonuses. But he finds it hard, if not impossible to find a job now.

so...big f**k...i was headhunted 12 times last year.... does it matter???

He and his wife have three children aged eight to 16, and they are also taking care of his 90-year-old mother.

i feel sorry for him....

Sends out 20-30 applications a month

great job....don't stop.... keep it up...

hint hint.... get it....

"When they see that I have no university degree, they say they will contact me again but they never do. Even when I indicate that I am willing to lower my salary expectations to only S$3,000, which is the starting pay of a fresh grad.

wake up Mr Ang.... you are not employable anymore....consider Macdonald's $3.20/hour... get it into your head...sorry to drill this into you....if you can't even keep your job or prepare yourself well before your ex-company folded... too bad.... you can't survive in this world by saying what you have done in the past....you survive by being "desirable" now...not what happened in the 90s...or last year....

"They say that I have too much experience. I don't understand, why don't companies want to employ an experienced staff who is willing to work for less pay? Isn't that a good thing? So I think that my age is a factor."

load of crap..... enough of this politically correct statements...no one wants to employ old workers....this is reality...

He also says that he empathises with Mr Ang's plight, but feels that offering to lower his pay does not help as companies generally pay according to the position and whether the applicant is willing to lower his expectations is not a factor in their hiring decision.

yada yada yada yada...crap load of shit talk....

He added that older job seekers who have ample experience, should not be discouraged although they may face rejection during the process of looking for a job, because employers who recognise their ability will hire them.

yep......macdonald's... like i say....

there are many...i can tell you...many such Mr Angs around in Singapore...i kid you not...

sadly...these Mr Angs are probably not going to get employed anymore... they have been replaced by younger, more educated and energetic employees....

these Mr Angs will sit around coffee shops and begin resenting the system, the govt, the mother-in-law, the wife, the ex-girlfriends... etc... and still, they wont find a job.... and even if they do...at a majorly discounted salary...they will feel the jobs are "beneath" them...they will sulk, drink, become an alcoholic...swear at their fates...their bad destinies...etc...

until, they come to terms with the fucking fact that their usefulness as employees has been exhausted...they will likely remain..."useless"...constantly blaming the surrounding, environment and even karma maybe...

these Mr Angs should get a grip of reality....move on and do something useful to themselves and their love ones.... eg...go KTVs...enjoy themselves.... watch porn...and after that....wake up and figure out they have a life beyond employment...

then and only then...will they know what they can really achieve....

for the likes of Mr Ang..i say....grow up...no one owes u a fucking living.... make a living thru your own ability.... not by going to the papers... seeking sympathy....

ps : and i think i qualify to be so caustic...bcos onec upon a time...i had 50 cents in my wallet....and that was all i had in my name.... so, i know what poverty is all about...and if a d**k like me can turn things around...a d**k like Mr Ang with a secondary education can do something about his current situation too...
