Europe Is Feeling the Iran War's Energy Shock — and the EU's Response Is Deliberately Modest

What's Happening

The European Commission unveiled a limited energy relief package on April 22 — tax flexibility, coordinated gas storage refilling and guidance on emergency oil stocks — but stopped well short of price caps or centralized intervention.

Europe entered the crisis with gas storage at a five-year low, and jet fuel supplies could face critical tightness within weeks.

What Comes Next

Expect elevated, volatile energy prices and a fragmented response as wealthier member states cushion households while fiscally constrained ones fall behind.

If jet fuel shortages materialize, mandatory allocation mechanisms could disrupt aviation and logistics ahead of peak summer travel — and any deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz won't normalize supply overnight.

Von der Leyen warns Iran war may damage Europe for years

The continent is now sagging under elevated oil and gas prices, and fearing a scarcity of essential products like jet fuel and fertiliser.

The EU has spent an extra 27 billion euros (S$40.4 billion) on fossil fuel imports since the war began in late February.

The Bruegel think tank also estimated that EU countries have committed over 10 billion euros to shield consumers and businesses from rising energy prices.
