Why gold remains our top conviction for 2026

Strategic and cyclical factors, suggest that the ongoing technical correction in gold is an opportunity

Gold’s historically low correlation with other assets makes it one of the best portfolio diversifiers.

by Rajat Bhattacharya

Gold is set to outperform global bonds for the 10th year in a row.

Lifted the price of the precious metal by over 50 per cent this year and by more than 150 per cent over the past three years.

There are three structural drivers of the gold rally:
1) Geopolitical uncertainty
The top three EM central bank gold holders are China with 8 per cent of officially declared reserves in gold; India with 15 per cent and Russia with 41 per cent. The share of gold in US central bank reserves is 78 per cent.
2) Worldwide concerns about expansionary fiscal policies
Japanese government’s debt which is close to 230 per cent of GDP, the largest in the world.
3) Increased doubts about the Fed’s independence

Cyclical drivers
1) Fed policy easing and falling real rates
2) Seasonal demand from China ahead of Chinese New Year (CNY)
Jewellery accounts for half of global gold demand, with China and India accounting for more than half of the world’s jewellery market.
3) Rising demand for gold as an alternative investment

Precious metals drop amid profit taking; silver, platinum retreat from record highs

Spot gold fell 4.2% to $4,340.52 an ounce by 12:00 p.m. ET (17:00 GMT) after hitting a record $4,549.71 on Friday.

Platinum dropped nearly 13% to $2,134.59/ozafter touching a record peak of $2,478.50 earlier in the session, while silver shed 8.4% to $72.51 an ounce, also retreating from a record high of $83.62 hit earlier in the session.

Spot palladium plunged 15% to $1,636.80/oz.

Gold has surged about 65% this year. Platinum and palladium are also on track for annual gains.

Silver has outperformed all with a 150% gain so far, driven by its critical mineral status, supply shortages and rising industrial and investor demand.

Can gold and silver deliver another outstanding year in returns?

A bullish outlook still holds for gold, but caution is warranted for silver.

by Daryl Guppy

China controls around 60 per cent of silver refining, not the supply of silver.

Silver: The parabolic trend line suggests there is a high probability of trend collapse in early February.

The targets for the gold price are defined using trading band analysis. This value is projected gives a target value near US$4,935.
