The last 125 bps of bank rate cuts by the BoE have seen the 10-year Gilt rise 87 bps.

Cutting rates is NOT lower long rates!

Probably because investors are losing confidence in these governments.

Most will have to debase their currencies further by running high deficits. As a result a higher yield premium is being demanded.

The skepticism is warranted. I wouldn't want to lend to any of these countries for 30 years at prevailing long-end rates.

US govt shutdown may prompt first-ever inflation bond workaround

By DAVIDE BARBUSCIA and And ANIRBAN SEN

With the standoff now the second-longest on record, the White House warned there will likely be no inflation data published next month, which means the BLS’ October CPI report scheduled for Nov 13 won’t be released.

That could be a headache for Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (Tips) market participants, as the value of those bonds, which investors use to protect their capital from inflation, hinges directly on the index.

Tips pay a fixed interest rate, but the interest is calculated on a principal amount that rises with inflation and falls in periods of deflation.
