South Korea says two more China snacks tainted with melamine

Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Cheese

• Cadbury recalls China-made sweets from HK, Taiwan, Australia
• Japanese producer finds melamine in recalled food
• Taiwan's Pizza Hut withdraws tainted cheese

SEOUL - South Korea's food watchdog said Tuesday that two more snacks imported from China were contaminated with the toxic chemical melamine, bringing the number of tainted brands discovered locally to six.

The products are Ritz Cracker Sandwiches Cheese, produced by Nabisco Food Suzhou Co, and Savory Rice Crackers from Danyang Day Bright Foods Co, said the Korea Food and Drug Administration.

Traces of melamine were previously detected in "Misarang Custard" and "Misarang Coconut" cakes, which were manufactured in China and sold by South Korea's Haitai Confectionery and Food Co.

The two other brands are Milk Rusk biscuits and Vegetable Creamer.

The South Korean agency has been inspecting 428 brands of imported food. It has completed checks on 186 items and found six contaminated with the chemical.

All six brands have been recalled, it said.

South Korea began the inspection after China said melamine, largely used in making plastics, was found in infant milk formula, sickening nearly 53,000 children and killing four.

South Korea has banned the import of all products containing Chinese powdered milk. - AFP/vm

AVA detects melamine in two more China products

• "White Rabbit Creamy Candy" from China also tainted with melamine
• China's Yili products ordered to be taken off shelves

SINGAPORE : The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) has detected industry chemical melamine in two additional products imported from China.

In a statement on Tuesday, AVA said both products contain milk as an ingredient.

The products are New Sshma Ows Mallow Dippers - Strawberry Flavour; and Silang - House of Steamed Potato - Potato & Tomato Cracker.

This brings the total number of affected products to 10.

AVA said all importers will be required to destroy the tainted products under AVA's supervision.

With the amount of melamine detected in the two latest products, the AVA said a 60kg adult would be able to tolerate eating 101 cups of New Sshma Ows Mallow Dippers-Strawberry Flavour every day, or 20 packs of Silang - House of Steamed Potato - Potato & Tomato Cracker.

The AVA has suspended the import and sale of all milk and milk products from China since 19 September 2008.

Anyone who finds such products still on sale should inform AVA immediately.

The other products that were earlier found to be contaminated with melamine are:-
1) Yi Li Choice Dairy Fruit Bar Yogurt Flavoured Ice Confection;
2) Dutch Lady Strawberry Flavoured Milk;
3) White Rabbit Creamy Candy;
4) Dutch Lady Banana Flavoured Milk;
5) Dutch Lady Honeydew Flavoured Milk;
6) Silang - House of Steamed Potato - Potato Cracker;

Taiwan finds melamine in biscuits imported from Malaysia

A Taiwan company began Tuesday to recall a batch of cheese cracker sandwiches imported from Malaysia after finding the toxic chemical melamine in the biscuits, reported dpa.

The Golden Kestrel Co Ltd ordered the recall after test results at two laboratories showed traces of melamine in the Regimen House cheese cracker sandwich, the company said on its website.

The result from one lab showed the cracker contained 29 parts per million (ppm) of melamine while the other test showed its melamine concentration is 17 ppm.

Taiwan's permitted melamine concentration is 2.5 ppm.

Golden Kestrel claims that it imported 12,314 boxes of the Regimen House cheese cracker sandwich - two round biscuits stuck together by cheese filling - from Malaysia between April and July. They were sold at the Costco hypermarkets across Taiwan.

Golden Kestrel has removed the cheese cracker sandwiches from Costco, and has been asked to submit import papers and records of the sale of the biscuits to the Taipei City Government's Department of Health.

Toxic milk storm spreads to Hong Kong, New Zealand, Indonesia and Malaysia
Taiwan News, Website Editorial Staff

Monday, Sept. 29, 2008. Cadbury became the latest foreign company Monday to be hit by China's tainted milk scandal, ordering a recall of its Chinese-made products after saying tests "cast doubt" on their safety. (AP Photo/Kin Cheung) (file photo) Associated Press

TAIPEI (Taiwan News)- The Health Bureau of Taipei City Government got the report from Golden Kestrel Co. (晨鴻食品公司) that their cheese sandwich imported from Malaysia contained 29.818 parts per million of melamine. The Health Bureau of Taipei County sealed up 20 thousand boxes of Golden Kestrel’s cheese sandwich products on Sep 30. The products are sold via Costco hypermarkets and its company website. The Health Bureau decided to examine dairy products from Malaysia.

Tatua Foods Company from New Zealand announced that 4 ppm of melamine was found in its company-made lactoferrin (乳鐵蛋白). Parents who spend money on expensive nutrition products got worried because lactoferrin was added in some brands of baby formula. Taipei City Health Bureau sealed lactoferrin products from Toong Yeuan Enterprise (統園公司) and had them taken off shelves before the examination result comes out.

Hong Kong Food Safety Center announced on the 30th that Pocky (百奇) coffee-flavored cookie bars from Japan’s Ezaki Glico Company (江崎固力果), and coconut and walnut cake from China’s Tian Le Yuan Foods Co. (天樂園食品公司) contain melamine and should be recalled from shelves.

After Indonesia’s Health Department found melamine in soy bean milk made by China, South Korea decided to take an overall examination on Chinese products with ingredients of soy protein.

Malamine found in Nestle milk products

Taiwan's health minister said six Nestle milk products found tainted with melamine were banned from sale.

"The products from [the mainland province of] Heilongjiang were tested for very low levels of melamine and removed from the shelves,'' said health minister Yeh Ching-chuan.

The products, manufactured by Heilongjiang-based Shuangcheng Nestle and sold under the labels Nestle and Klim, include forumlas for children and the elderly, according to the health department.

This added to a growing list of tainted mainland-made dairy products found on the island, including milk, creamers, instant coffee, soups and sweets.

Taiwan has banned all mainland dairy imports following the tainted milk scandal there and ordered those already imported to be tested for melamine.
