McDonald’s shares dropped in extended trading on Tuesday after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said an E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burgers has led to 10 hospitalizations and one death.

The company said initial findings from the ongoing investigation show that some of the illnesses may be linked to slivered onions — or fresh onions sliced into thin shapes — that are used in the Quarter Pounder and sourced by a single supplier that serves three distribution centers.

McDonald’s has instructed all local restaurants to remove slivered onions from their supply and has paused the distribution of that ingredient in the affected area.

McDonald's Plunges After CDC Links E. Coli Outbreak To Quarter Pounders

by ED CARSON

The outbreak has hit 10 states, with 10 hospitalizations and one death.

"Investigators are working to determine if the slivered onions or beef patties on Quarter Pounder burgers are the likely source of contamination.

McDonald's has temporarily stopped using Quarter Pounder slivered onions and beef patties in affected states. Diced onions and other types of beef patties used at McDonald's have not been implicated in this outbreak."

McDonald's provides update on E. coli breakout as shares drop amid scandal

by Brooke DiPalma

About one-fifth of McDonald's US restaurants are not offering Quarter Pounders or onions as a result of the outbreak. That's roughly 2,700 restaurants, based on 13,484 total US locations as of the second quarter.

It takes three to four weeks for the CDC to determine whether a sick person is part of an outbreak.

From Sept. 27 to Oct. 11, the timeline that the CDC reported, McDonald's is expected to have sold about 1 million Quarter Pounders in the affected geography.

McDonald's hasn't pinpointed the source of the outbreak yet, but it may be the onions.

According to spokespeople, the beef patties came from multiple suppliers, so an outbreak would mean cross-contamination across the board.

Also, E. coli is usually killed at 160 degrees, and McDonald's safety protocols call for burgers to be cooked at 175 degrees. However, all impacted locations source their onions from a single facility.

E coli infections tied to McDonald’s burgers in US rise to 75

Of the 61, on whom information was available, the health regulator said 22 persons have been hospitalised. Two of them have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can cause kidney failure.

Slivered onions used in the Quarter Pounder was the likely source of the outbreak and it was supplied by a single supplier that serves three distribution centres.

Taylor Farms was the supplier for the affected locations and McDonald’s has initiated a voluntary recall.

Other major US fast food chains such as Taco Bell owner Yum and Restaurant Brands unit Burger King were pulling fresh onions out of their menu items. These restaurant chains also source from Taylor Farms.

McDonald's Stock Plunged Following an E. coli Outbreak. Should You Buy Into the Uncertainty?

by Will Healy

It affected customers across 10 states, with the outbreak hitting Colorado the hardest.

With so much uncertainty, investors should not rush to either buy or sell this stock, and should also not see this as a "buying opportunity."

Its annual payout, which will soon rise to $7.08 per share, offers a dividend yield of almost 2.4%, nearly double the S&P 500 yield of around 1.25%.

In the first half of 2024, McDonald's earned about 61% of its revenue from franchising. This revenue consists of franchise-related fees and the rent McDonald's collects from franchise owners.

McDonald's derived only about 38% of its revenue from restaurant sales. This does not negate its obligation to win back the confidence of its customers, but it blunts some of the revenue losses from the outbreak.

In the first half of the year, revenue of almost $13 billion was up just 2% yearly.

Net income fell 4% yearly during that time to just under $4 billion.

(P/E) ratio is about 26,
