China closing gap in chip technology

China has developed its first homemade deep ultraviolet lithography machine with overlay accuracy improved to 8nm or below, according to a statement from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The DUV chip machine is expected to mass produce 28nm chips, according to mainland media.

The news comes barely days after the Biden administration locked in steep tariff hikes on Chinese imports last Friday, including a 100 percent duty on electric vehicles, to boost protections for strategic industries from China's state-driven industrial practices.

The US Trade Representative's office said that many of the tariffs, including a 100 percent duty on Chinese EVs, 50 percent on solar cells and 25 percent on steel, aluminum, EV batteries and key minerals, would take effect on September 27.

China's Ministry of Commerce on Saturday slammed the latest move saying it is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes the finalized steep tariff hikes.

Meanwhile, the European Union is aiming to hold a vote to introduce definitive tariffs on electric vehicles imported from China on September 25, according to people familiar with the plan.

The vote would pave the way for the duties to kick in from November unless a qualified majority - 15 member states representing 65 percent of the EU's population - opposes the move. The date of the vote could still change, said the people.

In other news, foreign direct investment into China amounted to 580.19 billion yuan (HK$637.9 billion) in January-August period, down 31.5 percent from the same period last year, the Chinese commerce ministry said.

The slump was bigger than the 29.6 percent fall during January-July.

Malaysia: TA tips buying semiconductor stocks following correction, look past forex impact

By Jason Ng

Every 1% fall in the US dollar would reduce earnings of Inari Amertron Bhd (KL:INARI) by 1.3% and Unisem (M) Bhd (KL:UNISEM) by nearly 4%.

For strategy, the house maintained its ‘buy’ calls on Inari, Unisem, Malaysian Pacific Industries Bhd (KL:MPI) and Elsoft Research Bhd (KL:ELSOFT).

However, investors should watch for downside risks, including further weakening of the US dollar against the ringgit as well as heightened geopolitical tensions weighing on economic growth and disrupting supply chains, TA Securities added.

China’s top 2 memory chip makers, CXMT and Fujian Jinhua, are selling mainstream DDR4 DRAM memory chips at nearly half the price of Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron, media report, noting the China prices are even 5% less than 2nd hand chips on the market.

Mobile Internet has plenty of room to grow within many global markets. Bullish for the makers of the chips and other equipment that powers it!
