Amazon.com Inc. – AWS Continues to Accelerate

2Q24 revenue/PATMI was in line with our expectations.

1H24 revenue/PATMI was at 45%/55% of our FY24e forecasts.

Better-than-expected AWS strength (19% YoY) continues to support growth driven by customers migrating workloads from on-premises to the cloud.

Retail growth decelerated, in line with the company’s growth guidance, due to customers being cautious with spending.

We maintain the BUY recommendation with an unchanged target price of US$220.00, WACC of 6.4%, and terminal growth rate of 5%.

We increase our FY24e PATMI/CAPEX forecast by 8%/7% to account for margin improvement and higher CAPEX spending.

Margin strength is from scaling up of AWS and advertising, as well as AMZN’s improvements throughout the network that helps lower costs and improve delivery speeds.

Amazon: The Magnificent Seven stock worth buying right now

Amazon has a strong presence in three large markets. It runs the most popular e-commerce marketplace, as measured by monthly visitors. It is the third-largest advertising company in the U.S., and eMarketer says Amazon could take second place from Meta Platforms by the end of the decade. Finally, Amazon Web Services is the market leader in cloud infrastructure and platform services, meaning it's ideally positioned to monetize artificial intelligence (AI).

Amazon reported mixed financial results in the second quarter. Revenue increased 10% to $148 billion, missing the $148.6 billion forecasted by Wall Street. But generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) net income surged 94% to $1.26 per share, topping the $1.03 per share analysts anticipated.

Unfortunately, management also issued somewhat disappointing guidance.

The company expects operating income to increase 18% in the third quarter, while analysts expected 37% growth.

Amazon still has strong growth prospects in e-commerce, digital advertising, and cloud computing.

Retail e-commerce sales and digital ad spending are expected to grow at annual rates of 8% and 10%, respectively, through 2027, according to eMarketer.

Meanwhile, public cloud services revenue is forecasted to compound at 19% annually through 2028, according to IDC.

Indeed, Wall Street expects earnings per share to increase at 23% annually through 2027. That makes the current valuation of 38.5 times earnings look reasonable.

I say that because those figures give a PEG ratio of 1.7, a material discount to the three-year average of 2.9. Patient investors should feel confident buying a small position in Amazon today.

Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) – Thursday, August 1

Amazon reported mixed results for its second quarter after the closing bell.

Earnings rose 94% year-over-year to $1.26 per share, up from earnings of $0.65 per share a year ago. This topped earnings estimates of $1.03 per share by 22.3%.

Revenue increased 10.1% year-over-year to $147.9 billion, falling short of expectations for $148.56 billion.

The company’s cloud segment, Amazon Web Services (AWS), reported $26.28 billion in revenue, representing 19% growth from the year prior. This beat estimates for $26.02 billion in revenue.

Advertising revenue jumped 20% to $12.77 billion but fell short of expectations for $13 billion.

Amazon also issued weak guidance for its third quarter. It expects third-quarter operating income between $11.5 billion to $15 billion, lower than the consensus estimate for $15.3 billion.

Third-quarter revenue is forecast to be between $154 billion and $158.5 billion, or 8% to 11% year-over-year revenue growth.

Amazon.com said it would spend £8 billion (S$13.6 billion) in the United Kingdom to grow its cloud business, adding to a string of recent expansion moves in Europe and giving Britain’s new Labour government a welcome investment boost.

The five-year investment by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in data centres will support up to 14,000 jobs and contribute £14 billion to UK GDP between 2024 and 2028.

Amazon has committed tens of billions of US dollars for expanding AWS globally, announcing similar long-term projects in Germany, Mexico, the US, Saudi Arabia and Singapore this year.

AWS, the world’s largest provider of cloud computing services and data storage via massive server farms, is facing increasing competition from rivals such as Microsoft, which is mounting its own global expansion.

Amazon - Stock Analyst Research
Target Price* 240.00
Recommendation ACCUMULATE

Amazon.com Inc. – Strong Third-Quarter Profitability

3Q24 revenue was in line with expectations.

PATMI increased by 73% YoY due to continued cost-reduction efforts and increasing profitability and contribution from AWS.

9M24 Revenue/PATMI was at 70%/79% of our FY24e forecasts.

+19% YoY AWS growth was the main driver of total revenue.

AWS operating margin increased 6.8% YoY to 38.1% due to cost control and the extension of server useful life, contributing to AMZN’s overall 3.2% YoY operating margin expansion.

We keep our FY24e revenue unchanged but increase PATMI by 6% to reflect the improving efficiencies, lowered costs, and higher operating margins from retail and AWS.

We raise our DCF target price to US$240 (prev. US$220).

We downgrade our recommendation from BUY to ACCUMULATE as we account for recent share price performance.

We believe AMZN is well-positioned in generative AI and should benefit as cloud migration remains in its early stages.
