Semiconductor 1Q24 Update - Memory in full recovery mode

1Q24 revenue growth accelerated significantly to 45% YoY (4Q23: 25% YoY).

NVDA’s >3.5x spike in revenue (accounting for 22% points of the sector’s YoY growth) helped to offset lingering weakness in Equipment.

AI demand remained very robust, with AI GPUs (NVDA) still the main beneficiaries.

Memory companies are seeing a huge return to growth after 4 quarters of decline.

Semiconductors still outperforming vs S&P 500 on 1M/3M/1Y.

Forward guidance is for 2Q24e revenue growth of ~32% YoY. We expect growth to be supported by increasing AI-related spending on GPUs and High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a slight recovery in the PC market, and higher wafer fabrication of <7nm chips.

Malaysia: TA Securities stays ‘overweight’ on semiconductor sector on projected improvement, keeps ‘buy’ on Inari

By Anis Hazim

TA has a “buy” call only on Inari Amertron Bhd (KL:INARI), with a target price (TP) of RM4.30.

TA Securities maintained “hold” on Unisem (M) Bhd (KL:UNISEM) with a TP of RM4.37, Malaysian Pacific Industries Bhd (KL:MPI) at a TP of RM41.10, and Elsoft Research Bhd (KL:ELSOFT) with a TP of 58 sen.

We expect the sentiment of the semiconductor sector in Malaysia [to] improve further, backed by an anticipated healthy recovery in global demand and increasing trade diversion opportunities as a result of the China Plus One (China+1) strategy.

Nonetheless, TA Securities flagged several downside risks to its rating, including heightened geopolitical tensions weighing on economic growth and disrupting supply chains, weaker-than-expected sales and the weakening of the US dollar against the ringgit.

“China’s import of chips—$260 billion in 2017, the year of Xi’s Davos debut — was far larger than Saudi Arabia’s export of oil or Germany’s export of cars.

China spends more money buying chips each year than the entire global trade in aircraft. No product is more central to international trade than semiconductors.
