Alert: McDonald’s (MCD) is a Very Attractive Buy Now

by Mark R. Hake

It's dividend yield of 2.5% is well covered by this year’s expected earnings of $5.76 per share.

Moreover, 35 analysts polled by Yahoo! Finance expect McDonald’s to grow earnings by 39% next year to $7.99.

McDonald’s generated $1.064 billion in free cash flow last quarter, after all quarterly costs and capital expenditures.

Therefore, FCF was still high enough to pay for its quarterly dividend that costs $905 million.

Moreover, the company decided to continue its ongoing stock repurchase program. That cost another $902.6 million. Granted, this was down from the $1.44 billion it spent on buybacks in Q4.

It is trading for a cheap 24 times earnings, a 2.6% dividend yield, and an attractive upside of at least 18%.

SELLING THE FOOD FOLKS CRAVE MAINTAINS THIS DIVIDEND ARISTOCRAT'S STATUS

McDonald's (MCD) is the $165 billion king of fast food. It has around 39,000 locations in more than 100 countries across the globe.

And though sales and revenues decreased in its latest earnings report, McDonald's powers on through the COVID-19 crisis...

Nearly all of its restaurants are now open, and it has held onto its status as a Dividend Aristocrat – maintaining its more than 25-year streak of dividend increases while many other companies cut theirs.

MCD shares are up 156% over the past five years, including dividends. And they're up more than 60% from their March 23 low. As folks keep craving fast food and economies continue to reopen, that uptrend should keep going...

Overvalued Blue-Chip Stocks: McDonalds (MCD)

The history and growth of McDonalds over the 20th century is one of the great business stories in American history.

From one store in 1948 to 39,000 restaurants today in over 100 countries, McDonalds was the ultimate growth stock. But as mentioned before, all growth stocks mature.

And with 13,700 units in the U.S., unit growth has come to a grinding halt and is now shrinking.

U.S. comp sales are expected to be up 9% in 2021, compared to pre-Covid-19 growth of 5%. After this rebound year, comp sales should return to the low double-digit range.

MCD stock trades at 28x 2021 consensus earnings per share (EPS) estimates compared to long-time historical P/E ratios that averaged in the mid-teens range.

Success at fundamental investing is derived by both multiple expansion and earnings growth. There will be little if any multiple expansion for MCD stock. We will almost certainly see a contraction when the market turns sour.

MCD’s upside is limited to likely mid-single-digit growth, so it may be better to wait for an entry point that offers both multiple expansion and earnings growth.

McDonald’s beat market expectations for quarterly comparable sales on Thursday (Jul 27), as the restaurant chain’s relatively cheaper burgers and fries, attracted cost-conscious diners in an inflationary environment.

The company’s shares rose nearly 2 per cent to US$297.09 in premarket trading.
