Rare Earth

According to the U.S Geological Survey, China produced 38% of the world’s rare earth elements in 1993… and 33% of the supply came from the United States.

Smaller percentages came from Australia, Malaysia, Canada, and India.

However, by 2008, China accounted for more than 90% of global rare earth element production. And by 2011, China accounted for 97% of global production.

They are a highly strategic resource for our modern military – and we have to buy 80% of them from China.

Merger tightens China's grip on rare earths

The group has been formed through the merging of China Minmetals Corporation, Aluminium Corporation of China (Chinalco), and Ganzhou Rare Earth and will be under the direct control of the central government.

The new entity, China Rare-Earths Group, will speed the development of mines in the south.

The State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission will hold a 31.21 percent stake in the new group, while Chinalco, China Minmetals and Ganzhou Rare Earth will each own 20.33 percent.

China accounted for 58 percent of rare earth production worldwide in 2020, down from 80 percent from 2017, but it still produced 85 percent of the world's refined rare earths last year.

How China’s rare earth dominance spurs US and its allies to diversify supply chain of critical minerals

United States is taking a harder line in effort to end ‘undue dependence’ on essential resources from China, including solar panels and rare earth minerals

But the erosion of China’s market share, while likely inevitable, is expected to take a long time even as geopolitical tensions with West remain strained

China has a stranglehold on the world’s supply of critical rare earths. These firms are trying to loosen its grip

BY EAMON BARRETT

The U.S. isn’t the only country trying to loosen China’s stranglehold on the industry.

Companies in Australia and the U.K. are investing millions to develop new rare earth refineries too, with the global efforts to pry Beijing’s hand loose of the industry converging, by chance, around the year 2025.
