As reported by local media this morning, the Chinese National Health Commission quietly changed its definition of Coronavirus "confirmed case" in the latest guideline dated 7/2.

As a result, going forward patients who tested positive for the virus but have no symptoms will no longer be regarded as confirmed.

As Alex Lam observes, "this inevitably will lower the numbers."

Top US Official Warns Against Assuming New Coronavirus is on the Decline

Fauci said the number of cases reported by China is certainly lower than the true number, noting that patients with minimal or no symptoms generally don’t get counted.

Right now, the new virus is “spreading rapidly,” much easier than the SARS virus spread. There are more than five times as many cases of COVID-19, the new virus, in under two months than there was with SARS in an entire year, Fauci noted.

His comments come after a study found that the incubation period for COVID-19 can last for up to 24 days, based on patient observation. The study also found evidence of rapid human-to-human transmission. Such transmission has occurred in multiple countries outside of China.

Top Hong Kong medical expert predicts more than half the global population will contract coronavirus

'Sixty percent of the world's population is an awfully big number'

Epidemiologist Gabriel Leung, the chair of public health medicine at Hong Kong University, told The Guardian on Tuesday that experts believe each infected person will pass on the disease to 2.5 additional people — meaning the disease's "attack rate" would be 60% to 80%.

Leung believes the disease's fatality rate will eventually hover around 1%. If Leung's predictions are correct, that means upward of 40 million people will die from coronavirus.

Last month, Leung and a team of medical experts published a paper that claimed the number of reported coronavirus cases is significantly too low and that the disease is likely doubling every 6.4 days.

Virus devastation bigger than China lets on, data show

Hubei had previously only allowed infections to be confirmed by RNA tests, which can take days to process. RNA, or ribonucleic acid, carries genetic information allowing for identification of organisms like viruses.

But it has begun using quicker computerized tomography (CT) scans, which reveal lung infections, to confirm virus cases, health officials said.

WHO Adviser: COVID-19 Plague May Aggravate; 2/3 of World Population May Infected

With spiking number of diagnosed COVID-19 cases in China, Ira Longini, a World Health Organisation adviser, warned that the situation may aggravate as two-thirds of the world's population could catch it, the scientist was quoted as saying by foreign media.

Longini agreed that quarantines in China may decelerate the virus spread, yet the virus is still likely floating in China and elsewhere.

As China revised the diagnosis methods, the country boosted its count of those infected by almost 15,000 on Thursday.

Even with method to halve transmission, approximately one-third of the world may be infected, Longini said.
