At a briefing in central London, virologists warned that some 4,000 people were probably now infected in the city of Wuhan, but said it could be as many as 9,700.

Asked if the virus was already here Prof Ferguson said: “We can’t rule out the possibility. Border screening and the alert in the health system, is not 100 per cent foolproof.
“This sort of measure of trying to identify people who are sick coming off a plane will only identify, if you're lucky, people who will have fever coming off a plane.
“If somebody was infected two days before they travelled, they will arrive without any symptoms at all.

The newly-identified coronavirus has created alarm because there are still many unknowns surrounding it, such as how dangerous it is and how easily it spreads between people. It can cause pneumonia, which has been deadly in some cases.

"According to recent clinical information, the virus's ability to spread seems to be getting somewhat stronger," Ma told a packed media briefing on the second day of the Lunar New Year holiday, adding that knowledge of the virus was limited.

China Underreporting True Scale of Deadly Virus Outbreak, Expert Says

BY EVA FU

China has quarantined 17 cities, postponed school openings, and extended the week-long national Lunar New Year holiday to Feb. 2, in an attempt to curb the disease’s spread.

Despite such efforts, 5 million people left the virus epicenter of Wuhan before the lockdown took effect on Jan. 23.

Coronavirus, unlike SARS, is infectious during its incubation period, which can last up to 14 days—meaning it can be transmitted even when the infected person exhibits no symptoms.

Catching the Wuhan bug

Current Wuhan pneumonia statistics – 581 infected across 8 countries

Current outbreak appears less virulent compared to SARS; how China contains the virus during CNY period is key

Potential sector beneficiaries – Groceries, hospitals, pharmaceuticals, gloves, telco, e-commerce

Potential sector losers – Hospitality/Hotel, airlines/airport services, F&B, Wuhan production facilities

With Chinese nationals estimated to make a total of 3bn trips during the CNY period, the fear is that the outbreak will degenerate into a global pandemic as infection rate surges further, and the virus spreads to more countries as Chinese citizens return to work after the holiday period.

Initial data suggests that WHP is less virulent with a lower fatality rate of about 3% (9.6% for SARS) and lower disease spread among healthcare workers at 2.9% (21.1% for SARS). The virus also appears to be less lethal to the young as all the current fatalities are aged above 48.

Potential sector beneficiaries
(1) Grocery stores - Sheng Siong
(2) Private hospitals - Raffles Medical, Siloam Hospitals, Hermina
(3) Pharmaceutical companies supplying pneumonia test kits and treatment such as CTCM
(570HK) and Bayushan (874 HK)
(4) Glove manufacturers – Top Glove, Hartalega, Kossan Rubber, Riverstone
(5) Telecom - Advanced Info Service, DTAC, Singapore Telecom, XL Axiata
(6) E-commerce - Koolearn Technology, Alibaba

Potential sector losers
(1) Hospitality REITS/Hotel – CDL HT, Far East Hospitality Trust, Ascott Residence, Erawan
(2) Airlines/airport services – China Eastern, SIA, Asia Aviation, Air Asia, Garuda, SATS, AOT, Malaysia Airports
(3) F&B – Haidilao, Jumbo, Breadtalk, Koufu
(4) Production facilities in Wuhan - Yangtze Optical FC
