Karma

What do you mean by karma?

Karma implies, does it not, cause and effect—action based on cause, producing a certain effect; action born out of conditioning, producing further results.

So karma implies cause and effect. And are cause and effect static, are cause and effect ever fixed?

Does not effect become cause also? So there is no fixed cause or fixed effect.

Today is a result of yesterday, is it not? Today is the outcome of yesterday, chronologically as well as psychologically; and today is the cause of tomorrow.

So cause is effect, and effect becomes cause—it is one continuous movement; there is no fixed cause or fixed effect.

If there were a fixed cause and a fixed effect, there would be specialization; and is not specialization death?

Any species that specializes obviously comes to an end. The greatness of man is that he cannot specialize. He may specialize technically, but in structure he cannot specialize.

An acorn seed is specialized —it cannot be anything but what it is. But the human being does not end completely.

There is the possibility of constant renewal; he is not limited by specialization. As long as we regard the cause, the background, the conditioning, as unrelated to the effect, there must be conflict between thought and the background.

So the problem is much more complex than whether to believe in reincarnation or not, because the question is how to act, not whether you believe in reincarnation or in karma. That is absolutely irrelevant.

In each moment our experience is determined to a great extent by seeds from the past that are bearing fruit right now.

In each moment, too, we can plant a seed intentionally that will create fruit in the future.

How can we change our Karma (destiny) through daily Karmas (actions)?

Diamond cuts diamond. Thorn can be used to remove thorn. Karma cures Karma.

Karma, derided as causing the dualities of grief-joy, pain-pleasure, birth-death, also brings about liberation from the chain of duality.

Karma causes both bondage and liberation.

The sun rises; that act unfolds the petals of the lotus flower, but folds the petals of the water lily!

The sun sets; that act makes the good men hurry home to the company of their family but it makes bad men hurry out of their dens to the places where they revel.

When the palm falls on the mrdanga, the sound created is pleasant to the ear. But when it falls on an empty tin, the sound grates the ear.

Know that Karma ruins or saves based on what you choose to do.

What is the nature of the Karma that saves? Holding fast to the Divine. By this, you can foil death and earn eternal joy.

- Divine Discourse, Nov 26, 1967.

Test all your actions, words, thoughts on this touchstone: “Will this be approved by the Divine?
Will this rebound to His renown?”

Why should we not be afraid of the concept of karma?

There is a law of cause and effect; every karma (action) has a consequence, whether you like it, anticipate it or not!

A good karma produces good results; a bad one will produce a bad result.

Birth is the result of the karma done before death. If you are asked what happens to a person after death, you can point to yourself and declare, "This is what happens - Re-birth happens!”

This is no religion of despair; it is a religion of hope, of assurance, of encouragement to lead an active, useful and beneficent life. For, the future is in your hands.

Though today has already been shaped by yesterday, tomorrow can be shaped by today! Various types of Karma are performed to induce detachment, to channelise the desire towards eternal and universal ends, to transmute all acts into acts of worship, to offer adoration to the Divine who presides over every force of Nature, every energy of man, and every limb of his anatomy!

- Divine Discourse, Oct 15, 1967.

Practice the attitude of offering every act at the Feet of the Divine as a flower is offered in worship.

Karma is your thinking and through your thinking you are creating everything, your diseases, health, your relationships, or lack of relationship.

Karma

by Vishal Khandelwal

One of the best books I read this year was No Shortcuts to the Top.

This is an autobiography of Edmund Viesturs, wherein he documents his 16-year journey summitting all 14 of the world's eight-thousander mountain peaks (more than 8,000 meters above sea level), and his strategies to manage risk in extreme environments.

In one beautiful passage from the book, Viesturs wrote -

Although I remain uncertain about God or any particular religion, I believe in karma. What goes around, comes around.

How you live your life, the respect that you give others and the mountain, and how you treat people in general will come back to you in kindred fashion.

I like to talk about what I call the Karma National Bank. If you give up the summit to help rescue someone who's in trouble, you've put a deposit in that bank. And sometime down the road, you may need to make a big withdrawal.

The Opportunities that Karma Presents

It is common to think of karma as a sort of fate to which we are subjected, but it is more central to the Buddha’s message that karma is the opportunity we have each moment to choose what sort of person we are to become next.
