The stock market is trading at a record, but a look under the hood shows some troubling signs

"The healthiest markets occur when the uptrend is broad-based, which is not the situation in the present example," said Bruce Bittles, chief investment strategist at Baird.

by Fred Imbert

Among the signals:
1. More stocks declining than rising
2. A greater number of 52-week lows than highs and
3. A drop in small-cap stocks

Lax Creditors

Around 35% of companies in the Russell 2000 index haven’t earned a profit in the past 12 months.

So far this year, 83% of the companies that have gone public this year in the US are actually losing money.

And a full 14% of companies in the S&P 500 can’t cover the interest on their debt.

Falling growth stocks signal 'end of the bull market,' trader says

Traditionally, high-growth tech stocks have taken the biggest hit in the recent market sell-off.

If growth equities continue to fall, "that's the end of the bull market right there," says Stuart Frankel's Steve Grasso.

"This economic recovery has been very narrowly perched within the U.S.," especially the tech sector, says Rich Weiss of American Century.

by Carmin Chappell

"You have all the classic signs: Corporate earnings decelerating, ... economic growth decelerating, rising rates at the short and the long end of the curve and a ... painfully narrowly focused bull market in certain sectors and primarily certain stocks".

Goldman's 'bear market risk indicator' signals returns will be zero the next 12 months

Goldman's bear market indicator is at a rare 73 percent, its highest level since the late 1960s and early 1970s.

At such levels, the tool predicts a zero average return over the next 12 months and a "substantial" risk of drawdown.

The indicator is "flashing red," wrote Goldman chief global equity strategist Peter Oppenheimer.

"Historically, when the Indicator rises above 60 percent it is a good signal to investors to turn cautious."

Grim Stock Signals Piling Up as Wall Street Mulls Recession Odds

by Elena Popina and Vildana Hajric

More than $3 trillion has been lopped from U.S. equity values since late September.

Just 37 percent of S&P 500 companies exceeding their long-term moving mean.

The performance gap between defensive and cyclical stocks suggests that investors are starting to price in a recession-like scenario.

Societe Generale see the S&P closing next year at 2,400, an 18 percent decline from its September record. Still, even in their skeptical eyes, the threat of a contraction is a long way off: early to mid-2020.

The economic indicators that often precede recession -- yield curve inversion and rising unemployment -- are not flashing warning signs.
