Tech Earnings Star No. 2: Alphabet

On paper at least, you can see why Wall Street has remained a bit doubtful about the earnings from Google parent Alphabet Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOGL) going into the second quarter.

After all, the Silicon Valley leader in online search and mobile operating systems missed forecasts in eight of the previous 12 quarters, including the first quarter of this year.

But last week, Alphabet showed that doubters need to look at the firm’s long-term trends in mobile growth and cost control.

That second item may be familiar to you. Back in August 2015, I noted that Alphabet’s then-new Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat would focus the firm on more efficient spending on core operations and less on its “moon shot” projects, like space exploration and extending human life.

In the second quarter, the company said Google’s costs per click fell 7% after a 9% decline in the first quarter. And analysts expect total capital spending for the year to come in at 15% of net revenue, down from about 20% in 2014.

Even better, Alphabet beat on both sales and profits for the quarter, much of it on the strength of its mobile offerings. Sales grew 21% to $21.5 billion, as diluted GAAP earnings per share rose nearly 42% to $7.

Much of the credit has to come from its increased mobile outreach, where it’s making the most of the Android operating system used by most of the world’s smartphone makers.

Ad spending on mobile jumped 63%, compared with search-based ad growth of just 10%. Google is no doubt benefitting from the fact that there are now more than 1 billion smartphones in use around the world, making mobile search and commerce a growth area for years to come.

Since that August 2015 report on Porat, Alphabet has soared 17.1%, compared to 5.8% growth for the S&P 500.

Google rebrands cloud business, adds more artificial intelligence

By Julia Love

Alphabet Inc's Google said on Thursday it renamed its business-to-business cloud computing brand and enhanced some enterprise applications using artificial intelligence, the company's latest gambit to better compete with Amazon.com and Microsoft Corp. in the lucrative cloud business.

Discussing the rebranded Google Cloud, Diane Greene, senior vice president of Google's enterprise business, said the company has made good progress courting customers and improving its technology.

Cloud computing uses remote internet servers to store, manage and process data, and Google offers a range of apps like word processing and email, as well as the ability to host data and offer resources for developers. The new name replaces the Google for Work brand.

"We are closing the gap incredibly fast" with competitors, Greene, a former CEO of VMware who joined Google last year to ramp up its cloud business, told experts and journalists at an event.

Analysts say Google trails Amazon and Microsoft in market share but is gaining under Greene. Although the business is not big enough to break out separately in its quarterly earnings statement, Google reported a 33 percent surge in "other revenue" in its most recent quarter, which analysts said was probably due largely to gains in cloud computing.

Greene has moved quickly to streamline engineering and appointed new leadership to beef up the company's cloud business. This has helped improve sales, Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai said during the company's latest earnings call.

Earlier this month, Google acquired cloud software company Apigee Corp in a deal valued at about $625 million.

The company on Thursday also announced a partnership with consultant Accenture to develop cloud services for clients in industries such a retail, healthcare and finance.

In addition, the company said it had woven more artificial intelligence into its apps to help employees work more efficiently. Using machine learning to crunch troves of data, Google says its apps will prompt users to, say, open files at certain times of day or propose meetings based on their habits.

Google recently added a U.S. data center in Oregon in order to speed up service and next year will open more in Virginia, Mumbai, Singapore, Sydney, São Paulo, London, Finland and Frankfurt.

This Stock is One of Only a Few Truly “Must-Have” Stocks

By James Brumley

Bottom Line for GOOG Stock

Is GOOG stock bulletproof? No, in the same sense GOOGL now poses a real threat to Apple and traditional cable television companies, other outfits can and will pose a challenge to it in the future.

Alphabet Inc isn’t a company that ever becomes complacent or comfortable though, and it embraces change rather than resists it, even when it’s not clear where those changes are headed.

It’s a rarely seen philosophy that has been regularly prodding GOOG stock to new 52-week highs since 2012, and really, well before that.

3 Reasons You Should Buy Alphabet Inc (GOOGL) Stock in 2017

Despite its massive scale, the company continues to grow at a rapid pace

By Tom Taulli

Forward price-earnings multiple is just under 20 so the valuation on GOOGL stock is reasonable.

To put this into perspective, the S&P 500 is at about 19 times forward earnings.

Yet, many of the mega caps in the index do not have the potential long-term growth rates of Alphabet stock.

Stocks to Buy: Alphabet (GOOGL)

Perhaps the only thing not great about Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL), better known as Google, is its ghastly choice of new moniker.

Yet despite its ill-fitting name, Alphabet’s core product — the Google search engine — has already made information-seeking America great.

Founded by then-Ph.D. students Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were at Stanford University, the tech entrepreneurs leveraged the PC and internet explosion and created the go-to source for information on just about anything imaginable.

Its corporate mission, to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful, has long been accomplished.

And though Google has only been in existence for less than 20 years, like Facebook, it also has become an essential part of the American and the international experience.

Just try to go more than a few days without using Google. It’s nearly impossible, especially if you are someone who loves knowing things.
