What Color Are Your Meals?

If your meals consistently look beige you have a problem.

Brightly colored fruits and veggies are loaded with vitamin C, which reduces cortisol.

What's more, a recent study in The Journal of Nutrition showed that people who ate more of the nutrients in red, orange, and yellow produce had smaller waists as a result.

Belly blaster tip: Add color to your plate by topping fish with a mango salsa, or throw diced red pepper into your turkey meatballs.

How to Get to Sleep in Under 60 Seconds

Hunger pangs can keep you up but so can a full stomach. Watch your food intake in the evenings.

Certain foods will impair your sleep, include spicy and rich foods, which not only keep you awake but can also give you a food hangover the next morning.

A serious warning for anyone who has survived a heart attack by Dr. David Eifrig

Your heart attack could be an omen of cancer… according to new research presented at the 2015 American College of Cardiology conference.

The 17-year study showed heart-attack survivors (126,000 participants) had more than double the chance of developing cancer than patients (about 3 million participants) with no history of heart attacks. The most common cancers diagnosed were lung and bladder cancers.

The study also showed that young heart-attack survivors (between 30 and 54 years old) had the highest occurrence of cancer.

Keep in mind, the evidence in the study isn’t enough to establish a cause-and-effect relationship. I would recommend they look at smoking as a common factor in all these diseases. And I expect inflammation is the culprit.

Remember, heart disease is preventable. Do what I do and follow a healthy diet with plenty of greens, avoid the “white killers,” and walk as much as you can.

Walking is just as good for your heart as running. It prevents dementia, improves your immune system, and lessens the symptoms of depression.

One Ingredient You Have Been Using All Wrong

Garlic and its relatives, onions and leeks, are frequent fixtures in many cuisines around the globe.

The familiar odor and taste of garlic are deployed when it is crushed or chopped and the cell walls are broken, releasing the enzymatic activity of alliinase that catalyzes the formation of allicin.

Allicin rapidly breaks down to form a variety of organosulfur compounds, which are thought to provide much of the health benefits of this plant.

Since heat can inactivate alliinase, some people recommend letting garlic stand for ten minutes after chopping or crushing before cooking it.

The allicin found in garlic also increases the enzymatic activity of catalase and glutathione found in human cells. These enzymes perform important antioxidant functions.

Garlic has well-known antimicrobial properties and is about one percent as effective an antibacterial as penicillin.

Garlic has also been shown to reduce blood pressure and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Eating parsley after eating garlic can help remove any offending garlic odor.

How to Treat Sleeplessness

Treatment for your sleeplessness depends on its cause. In some cases, at-home remedies or simple lifestyle changes can improve the quality of your sleep. You may want to:
avoid caffeine and alcohol for at least eight hours before bed
limit any daytime napping to 30 minutes
keep your bedroom dark and cool
avoid stimulating activity before bedtime
allow seven to eight hours for sleep each night
listen to soothing music before bedtime
take a hot bath before bedtime
keep a regular sleep schedule

Laparoscopic Surgery

If you're scheduled to have a surgical procedure, there's a very simple question you can ask that can make it safer, cheaper and very likely shorten your hospital stay.

You might say it's a case of your surgeon giving you the "least" for your money.

I'm talking about asking if you're a good candidate for a less invasive procedure, such as laparoscopic surgery.

Now, we all know there's no such thing as a risk-free surgery. And you would think that a simpler procedure would be most surgeons' first choice.

But a new study from Johns Hopkins found that's not necessarily the case.

Researchers analyzed more than 80,000 operations, including some for which minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery should be a "no brainer" -- like a routine appendectomy or gall bladder removal. Laparoscopic surgery uses miniature tools guided by cameras to make very small incisions, rather than cutting through muscles and organs.

But researchers found hospitals and doctors vary widely in their willingness to use laparoscopic and other minimally invasive surgical techniques. And the reason has nothing to do with what's best for you.

When you need an operation, your doctor typically refers you to a specific surgeon or hospital. And most of the time, you're going to get whatever type of operation that surgeon or hospital specializes in -- whether it's the least invasive or not.

And that's bad news for you, because research has proven that minimally invasive procedures like laparoscopic surgery can shave a day and a half off your hospital stay and may cause fewer complications.

But only for patients lucky enough to be in the right hospital or to be referred to the right surgeon.

So before you schedule surgery, you should ask whether "less invasive" is an option. And if your doctor says it's not, the study's lead author advises to get a second opinion.

Just remember -- it's your body, as well as your money. So don't be shy about asking if there's an easier and more affordable way.
