Grapes in oil

Cooking food with olive oil is not the only way to lower cholesterol levels; grape seed oil is a flavorsome alternative with added health benefits.

Grape seed oil is high in antioxidants, vitamin E, and has the ability to raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels and lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels like that of olive oil.

The effect is due to the oil’s poly- and monounsaturated fat content. Also, the slight nutty flavor of this oil complements other foods such as salads, breads, and vegetables.

2 Exotic Spices That Boost Your Health

Spices don't just make your food and drink taste better. They also provide surprising physical and mental performance benefits.

For instance, peppermint is said to alleviate digestive issues. Sipping on a cup of peppermint tea after a big meal can help ease the digestive processes. When applied topically, peppermint oil may help to alleviate pain - so try a little rubbed into your temples next time you have a headache. It also may have antimicrobial properties - which is why chewing on mint leaves can help with bad breath!

Another healthy spice is nutmeg. This warm, delicate spice, also known as “pala” in Indonesia, is most often commercially derived from an evergreen tree species in the Spice Islands of Indonesia.

Nutmeg has traditionally been used as an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent. Some believe that topically applying nutmeg will help soothe sore muscles. A word of caution though, a little goes a long way. In extremely large amounts, nutmeg can cause psychoactivity leading to heart palpitations and delirium, but a teaspoon here or there is just right for adding flavor to many dishes.

You can use nutmeg in baked goods such as cookies or cakes, for a sweet-spice characteristic. Nutmeg is particularly good as a seasoning for winter produce such as acorn squash, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin. It can even add complexity to simple veggie dishes, such as sautéed spinach.

The Best Eating Schedule By Sarah Knapton

Dieters hoping to shed the pounds should watch the clock as much as their calories after scientists discovered that limiting the hours we eat stops weight gain.

Confining meals to a 12 hour window, such as 8am to 8pm, and fasting for the remaining day, appears to make a huge difference to whether fat is stored, or burned up by the body.

Researchers at The Salk Institute in the US, said it adds more evidence to studies which show that eating late at night causes weight gain.
They suggest restricting eating hours could help fight high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity.

"These days, most of the advice is, 'You have to change nutrition, you have to eat a healthy diet,'" said associate professor Satchidananda Panda

5 Tricks for the Best Nap Ever

A 2013 Gallup Poll revealed that 40% of Americans get less than the recommended seven hours of sleep a night; what’s more 43% admitted they’d feel better if they got more sleep.

Companies like Google, Ben & Jerry’s and Proctor and Gamble are now encouraging employees to take regular nap breaks.

Here are 5 tricks to get the best nap ever:

Find the Middle Ground

As with many things in life, timing is everything. “Basically, the best time for a nap is as close to the middle of the day as possible,” says Michael Grandner, PhD, psychiatry instructor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.

“Before lunch is too early,” says Grander. “Lie down too late in the day and it will interfere with your nighttime sleep. Now it’s getting darker earlier and daylight has shifted, so probably not before noon and not after 3:00.”

Top Tech Tip to Sleep Better By Judith Davidson

Think of how freeing it is to move your mind away from smartphones, computers and televisions. Screens emit blue wavelengths, which promote alertness and suppress melatonin.

To help offset this, you can use an app like f.lux, which will reduce the blue light as the sun goes down in your location.

But also taking at least one hour before bed to be totally electronic-free will allow you to get superior sleep.

Your brain needs to shift from “thinking” to resting mode and to have relief from lit screens.

Banish all media devices from the bedroom. Enjoy the freedom and the slumber

Risk of E. Coli is in more than your food

Uncooked hamburgers are not the only source of the potentially lethal e. coli bacteria.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported that petting zoos, farms, country fairs, and other sites that allow human contact with farm animals are a factor in the spread of the germ.

Farm animals that can carry the bacteria include goats, cows, and chickens.

Those at highest risk are children, the elderly and pregnant women.

To reduce the chance of transmission, the CDC recommends:
1. Avoid hand-to-mouth activities; such as eating, drinking, smoking, chewing fingernails, or sucking on pacifiers when around petting farm animals or when near their pens or fences.

2. Make sure to wash hands immediately after exposure to farm animals.
