Why You Should Stop Doing This (so much) By Verne Harnish

Sitting for too long reading books or replying to mails is not healthy.

In a study of 17,000 Canadians, Dr. Peter Katzmarzyk found "Individuals who sat the most were roughly 50% more likely to die during the follow-up period than individuals who sat the least, even after controlling for age, smoking, and physical activity levels."

Depression

Could Big Pharma's cash cow -- anti-depressant drugs -- finally have some real competition?

Science has proven that people can make their own antidepressant "drug."

No, not in your kitchen, but right in your own body.

And it doesn't come with all the side effects that the pharmaceutical varieties do. But there is a catch...it involves something we all know we need more of.

Exercise.

Researchers in Sweden discovered how exactly exercise protects us against the risk of depression.

The key is a particular type of enzyme your muscles make when you workout.

To figure out the specifics, the researchers had to start from the head and work backward.

It turns out that the "workout" enzyme -- the one our body makes when we exercise -- is a potent "antidote" to a damaging stress chemical that can cause depression.

The theory worked with both mice and people.

And it worked so well, that they concluded not only does exercise "reduce the risk of getting depression," but helps even those already suffering from it.

Granted, if you're depressed, the idea of getting up and going for a run isn't as easy -- and may not be as immediate -- as taking a pill.

But now we know how this effective, safe -- and cheap -- way to overcome depression is so much more than just a temporary "runner's high."

Walnuts

Could a simple little nut do what billions of dollars in research has failed to?

I recently told you that Consumer Reports asked two doctors to review the three drugs now approved by the FDA to treat Alzheimer's. And how they concluded that these meds don't do anything to help those with this terrible disease. Or reverse its course.

But researchers have just discovered something amazing. Something that looks like it can really help.

And unlike those drugs, this may offer a promising beneficial effect in "reducing the risk, delaying the onset, slowing the progression of, or preventing Alzheimer's disease."

And with no awful side effects.

Believe it or not, the secret miracle is...walnuts.

Yes, walnuts. I know it sounds too simple to be possible. But it looks like this common nut is much more complex than you could imagine.

A study just published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease has found that mice fed a walnut-enriched diet showed significant improvement in learning skills, memory, and motor development, as well as reduced anxiety.

And the amount of walnuts they consumed made up only 6 or 9 percent of their diets. That equals about 1 ounce or 1.5 ounces a day for us.

In a previous experiment, lead researcher Abha Chauhan, PhD., found walnut extract even protected against those amyloid plaques seen in the brains of Alzheimer's patients.

And the fact that walnuts were created to help our brains makes perfect sense. Actually, the clue to that has been right in front of our eyes all along.

Just think what it looks like when you crack that shell open...the walnut itself looks like a miniature brain.

More Important Than Exercise

The single most important factor in good health is nutrition.

Nutrition is more important than exercise, more important than cardiovascular training, more important than lifestyle. Nutrition is even more important than drugs, surgery, and all the other wonders of modern medicine.

It stands to reason. We are biological organisms with finely tuned hormonal systems. What we put into our bodies has an enormous effect on what we get out of them and how well and long they can perform.

Building Endurance

If you want to walk or jog for longer periods of time without getting fatigued, continue with a weight-lifting routine.

Lifting weights not only builds strong muscles, but also can improve your aerobic capacity. Improving your aerobic endurance level will enable you to walk, bike, swim, or jog for longer periods of time before exhausting yourself.

One of These a Day Increases Your Risk of a Heart Attack By 20%

A study published in Circulation found that drinking soda increases your risk of heart disease. In the men studied, there was a high increased risk of CHD (coronary heart disease) and adverse changes in inflammatory factors, lipids, and leptin.

The study found that those who had an average of one can of soda a day were 20% more likely to have a heart attack or die from a heart attack.

Bunch O' Honey

Honey just might be the pre-exercise energy source.

Honey has been found as a better pre-exercise carbohydrate than other sweet treats used to energize, such as candy and soft drinks.

Studies show that eating as little as 3 tablespoons of honey an hour before you workout can keep you from losing steam during your workout.

Honey seems to give you more energy flow than other sugars do.

Stop Drinking This

According to The Guardian newspaper, here's another reasons to stop drinking soda.

"Consumption of sugary soda drinks such as cola and lemonade may be linked to accelerated DNA ageing, say researchers who have studied the impact of the drinks in more than 5,000 people.

High-sugar fizzy drinks have been under fire from campaigners for contributing to obesity and type-2 diabetes, but this is the first study to suggest a link with ageing.

The researchers found that people who reported drinking a 350ml bottle of fizzy drink per day had DNA changes typical of cells 4.6 years older."

“Regular consumption of sugar-sweetened sodas might influence disease development, not only by straining the body’s metabolic control of sugars but also through accelerated cellular ageing of tissues,” said Prof Elissa Epel, of the University of California, San Francisco.
