On CNBC, Bill Fleckenstein: "I've waited for 5 years to short this market"

Winston's Comment: Wasn't it easier to be a bull for the past 5 years instead of being a bear ?

Most of the "experts" have been expecting the market to crash.

Yet it has been grinding higher.

Will the shorts give up and start to cover their positions ?

It's not fun to be a Short when the market is grinding higher continuosly ...

Thirty Stocks Traders Are Shorting Like Crazy By MYLES UDLAND

It’s hard being a trader shorting stocks.Short sellers, or investors betting that the price of a stock will go down, have to overcome unexpected fees, as well as simple math: you can only ever make 100% on a short position, but your losses are potentially infinite.

And just this morning, SodaStream, a stock that is heavily shorted, saw shares pop after Bloomberg reported the company was in talks to go private.

But this doesn’t stop traders from taking their best shot.

Year-to-date, all of the major stock indexes are higher, with the Nasdaq gaining more than 7.5% and the benchmark S&P 500 adding 7%. Despite these broad gains, we’ve found 30 stocks with market caps larger than $2 billion that people are betting against like crazy.

On the list, of course, is Herbalife, the company that hedge funder Bill Ackman has accused of being a pyramid scheme.

Other high-profile companies on the list include electric carmaker Tesla and yoga apparel maker lululemon.

This list, however, also exhibits two major themes: China and solar energy.

We ranked the stock by short interest as a percentage of shares outstanding, going from the least shorted to the most.

Short sellers target China, this time from the shadows

[HONG KONG] Short-sellers who profit from stock price declines have resumed targeting Chinese companies after a three-year lull, but many of the researchers who instigate the strategy are now cloaked in anonymity, shielding themselves from angry companies and Beijing's counter-investigations.

Three reports published this month separately accused three Chinese companies - Tianhe Chemicals, 21Vianet and Shenguan Holdings - of business or accounting fraud. All three companies said the allegations were baseless but their shares were hit by a wave of short-selling by clients of the research firms and then by other investors as the reports were made public.

The reports were written by research firms that did not publicly disclose names of research analysts or even a phone number.

In the last wave of short-selling that peaked in 2011 and wiped more than US$21 billion off the market value of Chinese companies listed in the United States, the researchers advocating short-selling were mostly public.

Hong Kong securities watchdog starts case against US research firm chief

HONG KONG: Hong Kong's securities watchdog said on Monday it was taking legal action against the head of a US research firm who it alleges spread false information about a Hong Kong-listed Chinese property developer.

The action - the first of its kind by the Securities and Futures Commission - comes at a time of renewed activity among short-selling research firms which have taken aim at a number of Hong Kong-listed Chinese companies in recent months.

The SFC said it had starteproceedings against Andrew Left, the head of California-based investigative research firm Citron Research, in Hong Kong's Market Misconduct Tribunal.

The SFC alleges Left, a high-profile short-seller, made $HK1.7 million after knocking nearly 20 per cent of the share price off Evergrande Real Estate Group with the publication of a June 2012 report in which he claimed the group was insolvent and had defrauded investors.

The SFC says the report was "false and misleading".
