Ten Quick Tips to Help You Connect with the Divine by Arleen Hannich

You do not need to "set time aside" to be with the Divine, although it's great if you can! Many of the below suggestions can be done while you're driving, standing in line at the grocery store, waiting for somebody to join you for your next meeting, or while you're doing the laundry or the dishes.

Of course, these suggestions are provided as a jumping-off point; allow them to fuel your own creativity. Do some experimenting, and discover what works best for you. Remember, the more you practice being with the Divine, the more accessible and the more "real" the Divine will feel to you.

TIP #1
Thank the Divine for something you enjoy. You do not need to hold out for a special event or special occasion. Perhaps your car starts without a hitch, one of the flowers in your yard is especially beautiful right now, or you enjoy the power and the relief of a thunderstorm on a sweltering day. Perhaps you see for a moment the unconditional love in your dog's eyes, or you suddenly see your child in a completely different way. Express your gratitude to the Divine in a way that feels good for you.

TIP #2
Tell the Divine how you are feeling throughout the day or simply about one specific issue. No need to tell the Divine what you want to feel, instead tell Him what you are feeling right now (for example, jealous) and how you feel about feeling that way (for example, ashamed of yourself ;-)

TIP #3
Love and appreciate your body for everything--or for one thing--that it does for you so loyally and so wonderfully.

TIP #4
Recall a time when it was indisputable to you that you received the Grace of the Divine. (For instance, a quick example in my life was when my car spun out many years ago on the 118 freeway in Southern California. This normally-heavily-traveled artery mysteriously cleared completely while I lost control of my car, did a 360, and then went "merrily" on my way!)

Remember how you felt as you received the Divine's Grace in a big way (or see how you feel now in hindsight). Remind yourself that this Presence may not always be this visible to you, but that it is always with you. Take a breath and just let that sink in.

TIP #5
Breathe with the Divine. Being conscious of your breath as a gift from the Divine can help you feel connected immediately. Recognizing that you are breathing the same air everyone else is also helps you remember how connected we all are.

TIP #6
Practice accepting yourself as you are in this moment. Your mind will try to take you everywhere but this moment, but simply choose to stay in the present moment and just accept what is. After all...it is! On the surface, this acceptance may not seem very profound, but releasing your resistance to yourself holds profound benefits for you.

TIP #7
Tell the Divine what you're doing. Ask what the Divine is doing, and be attentive. Will you see the answer? Hear it? Feel it? Anything's possible.

TIP #8
Look within, even if for just a few moments. Feel the Divine within your own heartbeat. Remember that you are not trying to connect with something that is separate from you. You are simply allowing yourself to feel what already lives within you.

TIP #9
Enjoy the beauty of nature. Feel it in your body.

Tip #10
Ask the Divine a question relevant to what is currently going on in your life, and expect to receive the answer. In the beginning, it might be easier for you to ask simpler questions rather than "what is the meaning of my life" type questions.

Take an ordinary postal envelope. Upon it, in golden ink, write the address of a person in artistic calligraphy. Insert a beautiful worded letter full of amazing sentiments, and drop it into a postbox. What happens to it? It will not move even a yard away!

Now take a simple post card, scribble unimpressive things with no special care, affix a stamp, an address and drop it into the box. What happens? The artistically ornamental envelope is inert, while the inartistic cheap document travels a thousand miles towards the person indicated.

Therefore, whatever may be the uniqueness or importance, the furore or attractiveness, the service that you do can yield no fruit if it is done without a pure thought or intention.

We do not have to beg for help

To follow another, however great, prevents the discovery of the ways of the self; to run after the promise of some ready-made utopia makes the mind utterly unaware of the enclosing action of its own desire for comfort, for authority, for someone else’s help. The priest, the politician, the lawyer, the soldier are all there to “help” us; but such help destroys intelligence and freedom.

The help we need does not lie outside ourselves. We do not have to beg for help; it comes without our seeking it when we are humble in our dedicated work, when we are open to the understanding of our daily trials and accidents. We must avoid the conscious or unconscious craving for support and encouragement, for such craving creates its own response, which is always gratifying.

It is comforting to have someone to encourage us, to give us a lead , to pacify us; but this habit of turning to another as a guide, as an authority soon becomes a poison in our system. The moment we depend on another for guidance, we forget our original intention, which was to awaken individual freedom and intelligence.

There are as many different worlds as there are perceivers or Beings or individuals.

You are not here to create one world where everyone is the same, wanting and getting the same. You are here to be that which you want to be, while you allow all others to be that which they want to be.

Something inspirational to think about ...

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror and noticed she had only three hairs on her head.

'Well,' she said, 'I think I'll braid my hair today.'
So she did and she had a wonderful day..

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head.
'H-M-M,' she said,

'I think I'll part my hair down the middle today.'
So she did and she had a grand day..

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head.
'Well,' she said, 'today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail.'
So she did, and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her head.

'YAY!' she exclaimed. 'I don't have to fix my hair today!'

Attitude is everything.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Live simply,
Love generously,
Care deeply,
Speak kindly....
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...

It's about learning to dance in the rain.

Strive - that is your duty. Yearn, that is your task. Struggle, that is your assignment.

If only you do these, sincerely and steadily, the Divine cannot keep back for long the reward of realization. The river strives, yearns and struggles to merge with the sea from which it came. It has that consummation ever alert in its consciousness. It attempts to make itself pure and pellucid so that it may be welcomed by its source. It overcomes every obstacle of terrain in order to journey successfully towards it goal.

Similarly, you too must utilize all the physical, mental, intellectual, moral and material endowments that the Divine has granted you so that you may journey to the goal of Realization.

The best you can do for anyone is to thrive fully and be willing to explain to anyone who asks how it is that you are thriving, and what it is that you've discovered—and then, just relax and trust that all truly is well.

What You Think About Others

What you think about others is more your business than what they think about you. Because what they think about you has nothing to do with you while what you think about them has everything to do with you.

Your thoughts generate feelings and emotions that affect you. It doesn't matter what the object of your thought is, what matters is the one thinking the thought. While your thought may be directed toward someone, it is still your thought. Hence, it is YOU who is affected by it more than the person you are projecting it out toward.

Pay more attention to what you think about others than what they think about you.
