Philip Morris International Struggles Despite Lower Taxes, Currency Strength

by Dan Caplinger

Revenue growth was much weaker than most had expected, with net revenue coming in at just $6.90 billion.

That was higher by nearly 14% from year-earlier levels, but was lower than the consensus forecast for more than $7 billion in sales.

GAAP net income was down 2% to $1.56 billion, but adjusted earnings of $1 per share grew slightly from the first quarter of 2017 and were far better than the $0.90 per share that those following the stock had expected to see.

The worst performance came from the new East Asia and Australia segment and from Eastern Europe, both of which saw double-digit percentage declines. Shipment volumes for Marlboro were down 7% worldwide, while strong performance for Chesterfield and Dji Sam Soe only partly offset declines for L&M, Sampoerna, and Bond Street.

Philip Morris International Inc.: An Industry Goes Up in Smoke

Philip Morris fell 15% and took the whole tobacco sector down with it.

By DANA BLANKENHORN

Net income of $1.65 billion, $1.00 per share, on revenue of $6.9 billion. The bottom line beat analyst estimates of 90 cents per share of income, but the top line was light, as analysts expected $7.04 billion.

East Asia and Latin America were strong, but revenues were down in the Middle East and Africa, as the company sought to offset lower volumes with price hikes.

Revenues from what the company calls “reduced risk products” like iQoS, which heats tobacco without setting it on fire, doubled, but were still just 16% of the total.

The dividend of $1.07 per share seems safe. It costs the company $1.65 billion to pay out, level with net income for the quarter. The fall of the shares on April 19 means the yield goes up to 5%, which should draw some income-oriented buyers into the stock.

Investors worried that growth of iQos is slowing after being an initial hit in Japan, and that the $4.5 billion recently used to introduce four new products isn’t showing a return.

Marlboro maker bets $100m more on alternative cigarettes

by Alistair Gray

Philip Morris International, the company behind Marlboro, is to spend another $100m this year developing its alternative to traditional cigarettes as a global marketing drive intensifies to convert smokers to a new generation of products.

Martin King, chief financial officer, said on Thursday that extra funds would be deployed to accelerate innovation of the company's IQOS product — a cigarette-like device that heats, rather than burns, tobacco. of IQOS in the US, are the latest sign of big tobacco ramping up investment to safeguard the industry's future.

Philip Morris Will Boost Your Income Yet Again

Aug. 14, 2019

Summary

Philip Morris has been paying rising dividends ever since the spin-off in 2008.

The growth rate has been slow the last five years but is picking up.

Philip Morris is leading the pack in the new products being developed within the tobacco space.

Investors can expect a 5-6% dividend hike this September.

Two factors have been dragging on performance for a number of years now:
1. A rising U.S. dollar and
2. Falling cigarette volumes.

The first factor tends to even out over time, even though it doesn't seem like it at the moment with an ever-rising dollar.

The second factor is a secular trend and is something the whole industry has to adjust to and preferably innovate out of.
