Video games tied to aggression
SHARON JAYSON USA TODAY
March 2, 2010 Comments 6
A NEW review of 130 studies "strongly suggests" playing violent video games increases aggressive thoughts and behaviour and decreases empathy.

The results hold "regardless of research design, gender, age or culture," said lead researcher Craig Anderson, who directs the Centre for the Study of Violence at Iowa State University in Ames. His team did a statistical analysis of studies on more than 130,000 young gamers in the US, Europe and Japan.

But Christopher Ferguson, an associate professor at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, said in a critique accompanying the study that the effects found "are generally very low". He adds the analysis "contains numerous flaws", which he said result in "overestimating the influence" of violent games on aggression.

Ferguson said his own study of 603 predominantly Hispanic young people, published last year in The Journal of Pediatrics, found "delinquent peer influences, antisocial personality traits, depression, and parents/guardians who use psychological abuse" were consistent risk factors for youth violence and aggression.

But he also found neighborhood quality, parents' domestic violence and exposure to violent TV or video games "were not predictive of youth violence and aggression."

Anderson said his team "never said it's a huge effect. But if you look at known risk factors for the development of aggression and violence, some are bigger than media violence and some are smaller.

"If you have a child with no other risk factors for aggression and violence, and if you allow them to suddenly start playing video games five hours to 10 hours a week, they're not going to become a school shooter. One risk factor doesn't do it by itself."

But he notes that video game violence is "the only causal risk factor that is relatively easy for parents to do something about".

Both of his college-age kids grew up playing video games, Anderson said, but many games rated "E" (for "everyone") contain violence."The rating itself does not tell you whether it is a healthy or unhealthy game," he added. "Any game that involves killing or harming another character in order to advance is likely to be teaching inappropriate lessons to whoever is playing it."

My favourite is PacMan.

It involves killing others to get more points.

In fact, I will play and optimize the route I travel in each level so that I can get maximum points out of it.

Does this qualifies for unhealthy game and unhealthy behaviour?

Actually I played games since I'm primary school. I'm not any more violent than others. But I would say that violence in video games can numb one's sensation. I heard in Vietnam war, that's what US used to train the recruits. From shooting bull's eye to the target board we use in army, the recruit will get numb to the shooting.

Perhaps the only game that will cause aggression is math blaster :D

This part is true. I am very interested in human psychology.

One study I read is that only 20% of the soldiers shot at the enemies during WW1. Most of them either shot too high and refused to shoot.

Its got to do with the in built human morality code that its wrong to kill another human being.

In order to over come this, during the VW, the US ARMY had the solders shoot at targets resembling human beings in order to desensitize them to killing. During VW, there was a marked improvement in kills when the percentage of soldiers shooting at vietcongs went up to 40%.

Now with the advancement of technology, they use simulated computer games to desensitize these soldiers.

Agree with Lapap. games last time not so violent. at most just shoot shoot 2-D style, or planes flying around, trying to evade bullets.

but games nowadays are super realistic and the visual effects are amazing. I have adult friends who play those demon-slayer RPG games in total darkness of their rooms and with special effects headphones. They said that its like a reality game - you are "sucked" into the games and when the demon jumped out, it really is damn scary! they will even have nightmares after playing games... and we are talking about adults here.

imagine a 10 year old kid playing such violent games... what will be the effects for them?

anything excessive either hours or one's mental capacity to process such violence is not good. (me sounds very UNCLE hor??!! )
