A company places the same job advertisement on both the Straitstimes Recruit as well as with headhunters on job websites.

Assuming one is interested in this job, then is it better to write in directly to the company or send the resume to the head hunter?
- What are the pros and cons?
- which avenue do you think stand a higher chance of getting an interview?

Assumption is that the candidate's profile is the right fit with job requirements.

in this scenario, you should apply directly to the firm...

Better still, call up the firm...and have a chat.

hmm.... it depends on which firm. some firms are more conservative than others. if the wrong approach is adopted and calling directly in can be misconstrued as being too aggressive, it might be counter-productive.

if this position is a senior role, it is better to go through grapevine to find out who the hiring personnel is and try to set up an informal chat over coffee... that's tough unless you are well connected...

Agree that this applies more to senior roles.

For example, if its the Finance Director hiring an accountant, its a bit strange to ask the Director to come out for drinks right to meet a potential accountant (one-of-many). unless you are so well-connected that your Uncle is a who's-who's in the corporate world.

This also indicates the importance of networking... it can start right from the onset of a career when one is of a junior position... cos you never know that junior buddy out yours could also become some director in 10-15 yrs time.

but i wonder whether there's enough emphasis and practise on actual networking. most of my friends are quite happy with their own circle of colleagues and seldom venture forth, unless your job nature requires you to interact with the outside world and build contacts.

networking is not about shaking hands and loading up the rolodex with calling cards... it's more about showing a genuine interest in knowing someone.... and making an effort to communicate regularly.... it requires effort and it takes time... good to start with interdepartmental colleagues and friends' friends...

Network beyond your industry.

network to include doctors, lawyers and bank treasury and commodities dealers...as one gets older, you will find them very important "friends"....
