actually, on closer inspection of the chart, I saw the faint pink line right on top of the price.

That is the 200 day EMA. Very powerful resistance level.

2. The trend will END but I don't know WHEN.

Look at the weekly chart, and you'll see that this one has been very well supported by the kumo for 8 weeks (current one inclusive).

However, the monthly chart flashed an evening star bearish reversal candlestick pattern.

possible play on this counter... either way, the resistance will either give way or repel price downwards...which means, a chance for some price swings away from such perceived resistance price...hence, playable...and WMT is a liquid counter...although, it is relatively non-volatile compared to other sector stocks..

Everyone seems to be expecting good numbers from Walmart tonight ..

What happens if they are wrong ?

If Walmart is stronger than expectation, will the Dow rally ?

And if Walmart is weaker than expected, will that be the catalyst that will bring the Dow down ?

Inline so this will not be the catalyst for any crash ..

Wal-Mart posts flat profit, forecasts in-line results

Wal-Mart Q1 international ops underlying profit up 7.8 pct

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) reported a flat quarterly profit on Thursday as its low prices attracted shoppers amid a global economic slowdown, but the retailer's results suffered from the stronger U.S. dollar.

For the current quarter, the company forecast results roughly in line with Wall Street expectations as it faces tough comparisons with a year ago, when it got a boost from customers spending tax rebate cash in its stores.

( This will not be available this year )

Still, Wal-Mart said it would continue to gain market share as customers change shopping patterns and focus on value.

"This is not a short-term phenomenon," Chief Executive Mike Duke said on a recorded call, referring to the boost in traffic it is seeing in its stores.

The world's largest retailer earned $3.02 billion, or 77 cents per share, in the first quarter ended April 30, compared $3.02 billion, or 76 cents per share, a year earlier.

Analysts on average had forecast earnings of 77 cents per share, according to Reuters Estimates.

Wal-Mart has been gaining market share in the recession as shoppers head to its discount stores to take advantage of low prices on necessities, like groceries and toiletries.

But it had warned that currency exchange rates would hurt its quarterly results, and it said on Thursday that currency exchange rates reduced earnings by roughly 4 cents per share.

Sales fell 0.6 percent to $93.47 billion. Net sales increased 4.5 percent to about $98.31 billion on a constant currency basis, Wal-Mart said.

TRAFFIC UP IN ITS DISCOUNT STORES

Sales at Wal-Mart stores in the United States rose 3.8 percent to $61.24 billion, while they declined 1.4 percent to $10.96 billion in Sam's Club warehouse locations.

On a recorded call, Vice Chairman Eduardo Castro-Wright said a large part of the growth in the U.S. discount stores was coming from new customers.

For the second quarter, Wal-Mart forecast earnings per share of 83 cents to 88 cents from continuing operations. Analysts had been expecting 85 cents.

A year ago, Wal-Mart got a boost in its second quarter from the U.S. government's economic stimulus package that distributed about $100 billion in tax rebates to 130 million households.

To entice shoppers to use their rebate dollars in its stores, Wal-Mart offered to cash the checks for free, and it cut prices on staple goods such as cereal and lunch meat.

Taking into account the lack of tax rebate checks this year, the company forecast U.S. same-store sales to be flat to up 3 percent for the 13 weeks from May 2 through July 31, which roughly tracks its second quarter.

report from a website called 24/7 wallstreet

*********

JON C. OGG
JUNE 15, 2009

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) is acting like a broken stock, and this morning’s big downgrade is not helping matters at the world’s largest retailer. Goldman Sachs has removed the stock from its Conviction Buy List and took its “Buy” rating down to a “Neutral” rating. Goldman Sachs is also taking its old $58 price target down to $56.

What is interesting here is that Goldman Sachs is noting that it is starting to prefer less-defensive retailers. It also sees near-term expense pressures and some difficult comparable sales now that it has dropped its policy of giving guidance and other issues continuing to affect the stock. While Goldman Sachs does still see upside, it just doesn’t see much in the form, of any near-term catalysts to buy the stock.

Shares are trading down about 1.5% at $49.10 in early pre-market trading, and the 52-week trading range is $46.25 to $63.85.

Wal-Mart posts higher profit
NEW YORK - WORLD'S largest retailer Wal-Mart reported higher than expected US$3.44 billion (S$4.96 billion) second quarter earnings on Thursday, steady compared to the same period last year.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart Stores, Inc reported earnings of US$3.449 billion (S$4.97 billion) in the same period in 2008, the company said in a statement.

For the second quarter of fiscal year 2010 the company reported earnings per share of US$0.88, on the high side of the company's guidance of 0.83 to 0.88.

The retail giant reported profits of US$0.86 per share from continuing operations in the second quarter last year. -- AFP
