Banyan Tree

I do like Banyan Tree agressive expansion plans worldwide.

Probably they could be a well-known hotel brand in future like Four Seasons or Hilton, but of a different niche.

They zoom into resort area, which land costs are cheaper and returns higher.

It could be a brand that put Singapore high up like SIA.

I also like its multi-disciplinary approach to hotel/resorts management.

They are into fund management, design/architeture, spa and gallery operations etc.

Banyan Tree

Postby kennynah » Sat May 31, 2008 9:51 am

i watched a media coverage of a similar resort group, based in thailand.

sorry, cannot remember the name...but it appeared to be big time...have many resorts already built and still acquiring land for further expansion... this could be a competition...but hor, i am not sure if that is public listed. regardless, this company is a threat and competition to banyan tree's business.

the resort owner is a thai national (british educated)

Banyan Tree

qxing78 mentioned Banyan Tree being a potential multi-bagger.

The following are some notes that I've on it:-
1) IPO @ 0.97
2) Capital Group has been selling while Liberty Square has been buying. Please check the SGX website for the latest transactions
3) There were some buybacks

The following are some Target Price that I've:-
1) DBS 2.03 Apr 22 from 2.38 Feb 29 from 2.8 May 9 from 2.20 from 1.29 Nov14
2) UBS 2.82 Aug 17
3) CIMB 2.6 May 16 Apr 9 Feb 29 from 2.75 Jan 14

dear qxing,

Glad that u started this thread. (thank you)

juz to share w you: i was in e Brand Finance Asia Pacific Forum (during march) when Banyan Tree mr. Ho Kwon Ping was invited as a VIP on to chair this forum ... later in e night, he was featured in CNA news [as usual].

for your info., they use western valuations to weigh out their brands, & engage 3rd parties UK company to do so. here's e extract from e forum:

Mr. Ho Kwon Ping, Executive Chairman, Banyan Tree Holdings, was the keynote speaker for the Brand Finance Asia Pacific Forum. He highlighted the increasing importance of brand valuation in this new economy, especially for transactions like initial public offerings. Banyan Tree Holdings engaged Brand Finance in 2005 to ascertain the value of the Banyan Tree trademarks in order to facilitate its listing.

if u r taking another approach to know more abt Banyan Tree Branding, i suggest u pick up this book <Branding in Asia> by Paul Temporal, 2000 edition - is e one i am shelving ... under Brand Management chapter, pg. 155 whereby Banyan Tree Brand was highlighted & elabourated.

(likewise, after attending e Forum, my outlook changed. i tend to look into e accountability of these intangible assets, particularly for retail/ food/ & hospitality service-related trades companies).

TOL..

An Arab investor or a US Hotel Chain could make them an offer. They do have a good brand name.
I think one of the US Hotel Chain was their cornerstone investor when they IPO. Need to check up on that later.

Recalled the Saudi Prince bought Four Seasons many years ago. At that time, I just sold my Four Seasons shares, just before the offer. Ah... story of my life :(

W: pls check ...

another thingie, i think mr. Ho still wanna to hold onto e Brand as e true Brand Owner (for various reasons, heritage or succession to next generation, etc). it is a matter of where he "parked" e intangible assets ... ... could it be under M&A, u can still retain e brand usage rights?

possible.

Actually, I got this idea (Banyan Tree) from a female friend who also invest in shares. But she is those type that will buy from IPO and hold on for long long time. She does not trade or buy from open market.

And her picks of IPO are just based on the IPO advertisement ,gut feeling and usually she buy only 1 lot.

I guess she avoid those cheap 20c or 30c IPO of small cap stock. But she is quite successful, though I think she did not buy Raffles Education.

Some of her picks like Cap China, Suntec reit, Starhub, Banyan Tree, Hyflux water trust etc.

Most of them did quite well and she just hold for dividend. Just sharing some of the different investing method.

I studied Banyan Tree for awhile and bought 1 lot as well.

Most of its planned resorts will be launched in the next few years, hence its risk is not about expanding and winning new projects, BUT on its execution.

I went to its AGM and heard CEO said that they invested to start a department just to manage those new projects and make sure no cock-up along the way.

Ha Ha.. yeokiwi :)

I normally spend a lot of time investigating something before buying it.

However, being a trader, I'm always very impatient with the position. So I normally sell too fast and just before they realized the value.

I have to always hit it into my head that deals takes a long time to put together.

Take care.

Banyan's Laguna buys land to expand Phuket resort

Laguna Resorts & Hotels Public Company Limited, the Thai unit of Banyan Tree Holdings Ltd, said it has agreed to buy a 38-hectare land parcel adjacent to Laguna Phuket from Cherng Talay Development Company Limited.

The land will be developed for residential, hotel and commercial use.

As part of this agreement, two land plots amounting to 8.8 hectares were purchased at the end of last week at about 380 million baht (US$11.37 million).

Laguna Lakes Limited, through which the purchase was made, has, at its own discretion, the right to buy the remaining plots over a period of up to 10 years. -- BT Newsroom
