For my second boy, the gynae told my wife that everything was ok and that she would not be due for two weeks.

We were also planning for a natural birth.

I then decided to fly that night and be back in a few days..

Just a few hours before my flight, the water broke. The same gynae then did an ultra sound. He accidentally slipped downwards. To his horror, he found a tumor the size of a tennis ball. He then decided that it has to be a Caesarian.

If we have had gone ahead with the natural birth, my wife would have been be in a lot of danger. And that gyane did not pick up the tennis size tumor in all our checkups, throughout the whole 9 months ... :(

especially in Asia, where people have an almost automatic reverence for medical doctors, some of these physicians have slackened in their moral duty of care for patients and focus more on profiteering.

therefore, as patients, we must do our part to remind them to upkeep their professional and moral duties, by asking them meaningful and probing questions. I always have no qualms in embarrassing them if they cannot satisfactorily offer me an explanation for my illness. better they be made uncomfortable and then do their jobs properly than to be given a easy passage and commit manslaughter as a result...

i have a friend, who for many months visited a physician for some ailment that just wont go away despite consuming all sorts of prescribed medicine. he then decided to seek a 2nd opinion after about 6 months, without any visible recovery. He was very fortunate to have done so. The 2nd doctor (apparently a very old and experienced GP at Margaret Drive) detected a serious health problem and insisted that my friend be admitted to hospital for tests and treatment immediately. He went and there in the hospital, a thorough investigation revealed he would have died if they hadnt discover the problem within weeks... his health quickly deteriorated while he was hospitalized but since the medical staff coirrectly diagnosed his case, he was treated and after 2 weeks, he fully recovered...

so....i am sorry i have to say this....some of these FUCKING doctors should have their licences revoked, sent to jail, get whack by rotans....they are no different from common manslaughters....

Warning Given on Use of 4 Popular Asthma Drugs, but Debate Remains

By GARDINER HARRIS
Published: December 5, 2008

WASHINGTON — Two federal drug officials have concluded that asthma sufferers risk death if they continue to use four hugely popular asthma drugs — Advair, Symbicort, Serevent and Foradil. But the officials’ views are not universally shared within the government.

The two officials, who work in the safety division of the Food and Drug Administration, wrote in an assessment on the agency’s Web site on Friday that asthma sufferers of all ages should no longer take the medicines. A third drug-safety official concluded that Advair and Symbicort could be used by adults but that all four drugs should no longer be used by people age 17 and under.

Dr. Badrul A. Chowdhury, director of the division of pulmonary and allergy products at the agency, cautioned in his own assessment that the risk of death associated with the drugs was small and that banning their use “would be an extreme approach” that could lead asthmatics to rely on other risky medications.

Tainted Irish pork may be in 25 countries, says official

• Ireland probes feed supplier after pork recall
• Singapore suspends import, sale of pork products from Ireland

DUBLIN - Contaminated Irish pig meat may have been exported to up to 25 countries, Ireland's chief vet said Sunday, as shops at home and abroad cleared out pork products amid fears of a cancer link.

"We believe it's in the order of 20 to 25 countries. It's certainly less than 30," Paddy Rogan said in comments quoted by the Irish media.

His comments came after ministers Saturday ordered all pig meat products from the Republic of Ireland to be withdrawn as dioxins, which may cause cancer, were found in slaughtered pigs thought to have eaten contaminated feed.

The recall involved products processed since September 1 sold in Ireland and abroad and has caused panic in the Emerald Isle, where many families would have been buying their traditional Christmas ham in the coming days.

Prime Minister Brian Cowen stepped in to try to calm fears Sunday, saying it was important the government took "whatever measures are necessary" to build confidence in the industry for the future.

"The problem has been located. The continuing examination and inquiries will proceed and we must take action to reinforce confidence to the public, and obviously also allow the industry to move on from this point," Cowen said.

Ireland's Food Safety Authority (FSAI) said it was almost certain that the source of the contamination was industrial oil which mistakenly found its way into pig feed made at an Irish factory, which authorities did not name.

Ireland is a major exporter of pork, with Britain the biggest market and others including Japan, Germany, Russia, France and the United States.

The crisis is another blow to recession-hit Ireland, where the agriculture ministry says about 5,000 people work in the pig meat industry, which is worth about 400 million euros (500 million dollars) a year.

The recall involves pork meat, bacon, pork sausages, sausage meat, gammon steaks, offal from pigs, salami, ham, sausage rolls, black pudding and white pudding.

Contaminated Irish pork has been found in France and Belgium, while Britain's Food Standards Agency advised consumers not to eat pork from Ireland or Northern Ireland for the moment.

Germany said it was taking all Irish pork products off the shelves as a precautionary measure, while Swedish authorities also advised consumers to avoid products containing Irish pork until further notice.

The European Commission announced it was closely monitoring the situation.

Dioxins are toxic chemicals that can have serious health effects, including causing cancers, if there is long-term exposure to them at high levels.

FSAI deputy chief executive Alan Reilly said dioxin levels found in meat samples were between 80 and 200 times above the legal limit. But he stressed the risk to the public was "very, very low".

"You would have to be eating products containing these chemicals for 40 years before you would show any signs of illness."

Padraig Walshe, president of the Irish Farmers' Association, said the contamination could cost Irish farmers hundreds of millions of euros.

"Pork products and by-products are used in food processing in a lot of areas so it is going to be very difficult for the industry to get itself re-established and get customers to buy output again," Walshe told RTE.

"It is a huge blow to the industry."

Irish tests find dioxins in cattle

Irish government officials say tests have confirmed illegally high levels of dioxin chemicals in cattle that ate the same oil-tainted food that has already devastated Ireland's pork industry.

Officials from the government's health and agriculture departments say the levels of cancer-causing dioxins found in cattle on 38 cattle farms are much lower than the levels detected last week in pigs. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the public announcement had not yet been made.

The latest finding appears certain to undermine Ireland's annual 1.5 billion euro (HK$14.9 billion) industry in beef, Ireland's primary agricultural export.

New bird-flu threat emerges

Three dead chickens tested positive for bird flu in Hong Kong, prompting the city to suspend poultry imports for 21 days and begin slaughtering 80,000 birds, an official said.

"We feel that Hong Kong is facing a new alert for bird flu,'' said York Chow Yan-ngok, secretary for food and health.

The chickens, found on Monday at a farm with 60,000 birds, had the H5 virus and further tests were being done to see if they had the deadly H5N1 strain, Chow said.

About 80,000 birds in the area around the farm would be killed to prevent the spread of the disease, he said.

Chow added that the 21-day ban on poultry imports would last through the Christmas holiday.

The kiss of deaf - Chinese man ruptures girlfriend's eardrum

A young woman in southern China has partially lost her hearing after her boyfriend ruptured her eardrum during an excessively passionate kiss, local media reported Monday.

The 20-something girl from Zhuhai, in southern Guangdong province, went to hospital completely deaf in her left ear, the China Daily said, citing a report in a local newspaper.

"The kiss reduced pressure in the mouth, pulled the eardrum out and caused the breakdown of the ear,"
the paper quoted a doctor surnamed Li from the hospital as saying.

The woman's hearing would likely return to normal after about two months, Li said.

"While kissing is normally very safe, doctors advise people to proceed with caution," the paper said.

To protect yourself from any potential risk from cellphone RF, here are a few guidelines:

1) Keep cellphone calls short.

2) Go with a "hands-free" headset or a speakerphone. These keep the cellphone from direct contact with your head.

3) Don't carry your cellphone in your chest or hip pocket. Even when in "standby" mode, cellphones continue to emit radiation, exposing whichever part of your body is closest.

4) When using a hands-free headset, let the wire extend fully between your head and the phone. This distributes RF in small amounts along the length of your body rather than concentrating it in any one location.

5) Look for a phone with "voice-activated" features. These enable you to place calls and perform other commands without having to hold the phone close to your head.

6) Use a standard "land line" whenever possible.
Find out the level of RF emissions for your cellphone. If the level is high, replace the phone.
