Viking Therapeutics (VKTX): Shares fell 8% in early premarket trade even as retail investors viewed its $200 million stock offering and $200 million debt raise as a move to strengthen its cash position for buyout or partnership negotiations.

VKTX Stock Eyes Blockbuster Week Despite Share Offering — Retail Traders See A Stronger Hand In Buyout Talks

by Deepti Sri

September 24, 2026

VKTX is heading for its best week in over two years after a 36% Tuesday surge on VK2735 obesity-drug data.

Shares slipped after hours on Wednesday when Viking proposed raising $400 million through stock and convertible notes.

Stocktwits sentiment hit record levels as traders debated whether the cash raise strengthens Viking's position in buyout talks.

In Viking's maintenance study, patients taking weekly VK2735 lost 16% to 19% of their body weight over 21 weeks.

Oppenheimer's Jay Olson raised his target to $120 from $100 and kept an Outperform rating, saying the maintenance results backed "bullish expectations."

H.C. Wainwright's Joseph Pantginis called the readout "highly encouraging," citing strong first-phase weight loss, lasting hold on a lighter schedule, and "very encouraging" gut tolerability. He kept 'Buy' rating and a $102 target.

Morgan Stanley called the data "very positive," noting the 17.5 mg weekly group cleared a 20% placebo-adjusted bar at week 33 with no plateau, plus up to 97% retention on two-week dosing and 90% on monthly shots. It kept 'Overweight' rating and a $95 target.

Truist's Gregory Renza labeled the package a "best-case scenario." The 17.5 mg start came in at 17.8%, the continued-weekly group reached 21.7% by week 33, and clean tolerability, he said, takes risk out of the step-down plan. Truist kept Buy and an $83 target.

VKTX Q2 Earnings Beat Estimates Despite Surge in R&D Costs

July 31, 2026

Viking Therapeutics VKTX reported a second-quarter 2026 loss of $1.10 per share, narrower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of $1.21.

The reported loss, however, widened from a loss of 58 cents per share in the year-ago quarter due to higher operating expenses.

Viking does not have any approved product in its portfolio and is yet to generate revenues. The company continued investing in VK2735, its lead obesity candidate being developed in injectable and oral formulations.
