Why US stock bubbles keep bursting without derailing the wider market

Years of loose monetary policy and government spending, increased available capital and zero-commission trading, made speculative investing more accessible.

More recently, margin borrowing and leveraged exchange-traded funds have added momentum to crowded trades.

Past collapses remained contained partly as they were financed mainly with investor capital rather than debt.

An estimated $7 trillion could be spent on data centres over the next four years, creating the possibility of significant capital misallocation if AI productivity gains fail to justify the investment.

An increasing share of that spending is also being financed through borrowing. If the broader AI trade proves to be a bubble, losses could spread beyond technology investors to lenders and the wider economy.
