The Semiconductor Sector Is Due for a Pause

SMH – the VanEck Semiconductor ETF – is up 80% so far this year, versus a 10% gain in the S&P 500.

Now though, the chip stocks are overbought and overextended to the upside. They’re likely to decline or consolidate for the next few weeks while the lagging sectors of the market play a game of catch-up.

The last time we had this sort of setup in the chip sector was back in October 2025 – just before earnings season.

Regular readers will recall we turned cautious on the sector, citing similar reasons as we’re citing today.

SMH fell 13% over the next three weeks.

A similar decline this time around would take SMH from its current level near 595 to 518 – effectively wiping out all of the gains of the past month.

Samsung Electronics Ranks First in Global DRAM Market Share in 1Q, SK Hynix Second

According to Counterpoint Research data, Samsung Electronics accounted for 38% of global dynamic random access memory (DRAM) market revenue in 1Q, continuing to rank as the world’s largest DRAM supplier.

SK Hynix ranked second with a 29% market share, while Micron Technology, Inc. (MU.US) placed third with 22%.

SK Hynix surpassed Samsung to rank first in 1H last year.

The two companies were tied for first place in 3Q last year, each with a 33% market share.

Samsung then regained the top position in 4Q.

Data showed that the gap between Samsung and SK Hynix widened from 4 ppts in 4Q last year to 9 ppts in 1Q this year.
