As many people celebrate their New Year, what is a worthy New Year's resolution we could consider?

You need not have a necklace for the neck. Speak truth; that is the real ornament.

The jewels for the hand are not bangles; charity is the real jewel.

Do not misuse your ears to hear worldly gossip. It is not the earrings which are real jewels for the ears, listening to good words is the real decoration.

What other ornaments do you need than these? That is the real jewellery. That is the only beauty.

When you have that real beauty, you can attain bliss. Beauty and bliss are not separate.

Beauty is bliss. Bliss is life's nectar. Understand and experience the sweetness of bliss.

The New Year has commenced. From today onwards, listen only to good things, speak only good words and do only good actions. Through these things, we should have purity of heart.

Make your life sacred by always thinking of the Divine. If people adopt this sacred path, there will be peace and prosperity in the world.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 14, 1993

He in the form of conscience activates the body. When man understands this truth of spirituality, he will never indulge in bad deeds.

What is the mantra that will aid us in leading a good human life and also march towards the realisation of our inherent Divinity?

Your eyes are very small in dimension, not even half an inch. But you are able to see vast areas of land and even the stars, which are millions of miles away.

Where do the eyes get such power from? It is only Divine Power.

You have a new torchlight with a new bulb and a new switch. But you cannot get the light unless you put the cells inside.

Your body is the torch. The eye is the bulb. Intellect is the switch. Only if you put in the cells of new thoughts will you have the enlightening experience of good feelings.

In this New Year, you should breed good thoughts. Think of Him who is in you, around you, above you, and below you. Divinity is there around and within you.

You cannot survive even a second without Divinity. You should always say to yourself: “I am man, I am not an animal.”

If you say, “I am man”, it is only half the truth. With a human form, you breed animal qualities. You should always recall, “I am not an animal.”

The combination of the two will make you desist from indulging in animal nature. The unification of these two will make you realise your Divinity, which is the truth.

Sacred thoughts are essential. They are the real rituals you should do.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 14, 1998

Look upon spirituality and morality as the two eyes of human existence.

What should our attitude be towards our duties and our profession?

Without working hard, you cannot get any reward. But nowadays, man is not prepared to work hard.

In the past, people would offer their salutations to karma before undertaking it:

Salutations to action. We have to offer our salutations to karma in the first instance so that it gives us good results.

In Bharat, some people follow this sacred tradition even today.

A cricket player pays his respects to the ball before starting to bowl. A dancer salutes the anklets before tying them to her feet. Even an uneducated driver offers his obeisance to the steering wheel before driving the vehicle. But most of the educated people have forgotten such an ancient tradition and culture. That is why accidents are on the rise.

There is a sense of fear and insecurity among people.

First of all, we must offer our respects and express our gratitude to karma before undertaking it. Everyone must understand his duty and perform it to the best of their ability.

- Divine Discourse, Apr 15, 2003

When man does his duty sincerely, there will be no shortage of food and water. Without working hard, one cannot lead a happy life.

What must we do if we hope for a good and bright future?

No one but Him knows about the future; so it is said that He alone has three eyes (the third eye refers to the knowledge of the future), whereas man has only two.

However, if you have had full control over yourself in the past and do have it at present also, then your future would be entirely in your hands.

Today, Man is all the time thinking about the past and worrying about the future. Always it is: Past, future; past, future; past, future!

Brooding over the past and worrying about the future, man loses track of the present.

You must not forget that the present is a product of the past; it is also the seed for the future.

The past and future are thus embedded in the present. Man does not seem to appreciate this basic truth.

If you want a good and bright future, then make proper use of the present. The present is a tree that has sprung from a seed called the past. This tree also has the seed for the future. Thus, the future is already here!

The best way to take care of the present is to ensure that your talk is always sacred. Where do the words originate? From the mind. Therefore, good talk implies that the mind also is good.

- Divine Discourse, May 16, 2000

One should endeavour to make good use of the present. Results of the past and the forebodings of the future are both available in the present.

How do we bring about peace and happiness in society and in our individual lives?

To attain peace and happiness, what is it that he must acquire?

The first thing we must acquire is love for the Divine. The Scriptures and the great ones, have declared that the Divine incarnates to alleviate suffering and pain, punish the wicked and protect the good. This is not correct.

The Divine incarnates to teach mankind what love is and how to love. Only when such love is developed, will man be free from sorrow and trouble. Sins will be wiped out and fear will cease to haunt men.

Therefore, the first aspect to be learnt is love for the Divine. Where there is love for Him, fear of sin will follow like a shadow. When both of these are present, society will experience morality.

Man’s primary duty is to foster these three:-
1. Love of the Divine
2. Fear of Sin and
3. Morality in Society

If we desire an object, we must perform certain actions to achieve that object. We must recognise the distinctive qualities of the object we love and develop faith in it.

Without love, you cannot have faith in it. Propelled by these two, we will take up necessary actions to achieve the object of love.

Love is Bhakti (Devotion); the faith is Jnana (Wisdom); the action performed to experience both is Karma (Righteousness).

Therefore, it is said that Upasana (worship) is the combined outcome of Bhakti, Jnana, and Karma.

- Divine Discourse, Jul 29, 1988

As the oil is the basis to the flame in the lamp, "Devotion towards Divine" is the basis to the flame of Jnana (Wisdom).

What is the value of pure love? How can we cultivate such pure love?

There is nothing equal to pure love in this world. Even nectar is insipid in comparison with the sweetness of love.

This love makes even the Divine dance in ecstasy, as well as the devotee. It expresses itself in dance.

Such pure love can find no place in the heart of self-seeking persons. It will dwell only in the hearts of the pure, the unselfish and the divine.

Scriptures compare this pure love to a precious diamond. Where is this gem to be found?

When even ordinary diamonds are preserved with great care in a strong safe, how much more safely should the precious diamond of love be preserved?

Who is entitled to offer this diamond to others? Only the person who is filled with love and who sustains himself by love always.

Only the Divine is qualified to offer such love. Only the Divine, who is the embodiment of love, knows the value of love.

Hence, the greater your love for Him, the greater is the bliss you experience.

Your bliss declines in the measure of the diminution in your love. The extent of your love determines the magnitude of your bliss.

- Divine Discourse, May 30, 1992

For love, there is no path, no reward, no discipline other than love itself.

When can we have the vision that reveals the divinity in all?

Whatever good deeds or spiritual acts you may perform, if they are not suffused with love, they are worthless.

Love is like a mariner's compass which always points to the north. Love should direct you Divineward in every action that you do. There is no greater path or goal than this.

Scholarship or ritual worship will not serve to transform your spirituality. Fill your hearts with love of the Divine. Then the nation will enjoy peace.

Your view of the world depends on the colour of the glasses you wear. When your vision is filled with love, the whole creation will appear as Brahma mayam (filled with Divinity).

This is what the youth of today need most. This love is not related to the body. It is based on the heart. It is present equally in all.

There may be varied bodily relationships, but kinship based on the Atma is one and the same. The One dwells in all beings. It is like the current that is common to all bulbs of varying power.

- Divine Discourse, May 30, 1992.

You may find a man without anger, without truth or without peace, but you cannot find anyone in the world devoid of love.

How and why should our devotion mature with time?

Take the Divine to be your father or mother but only as the first step towards transcending that relationship and merging in the absolute!

Do not stop on the steps; enter the mansion they lead to.

The Atma sambandham (spiritual connection) is the everlasting and unchanging sambandham.

As a first step, you use the flower, the lamp, the incense and so on to worship the Saguna form (Divine envisioned with attributes).

Soon, your devotion moves on to newer forms of dedication, newer offerings that are purer, more valuable and worthier of your Divine!

You feel that you should place before Him, something more lasting than mere flowers and something more yours than incense!

You feel like purifying yourselves and making your entire life one fragrant flame! That is real worship, real bhakti.

Do not go to Him with your hands full of trash, for how can He fill them with grace when they are already full? Go with empty hands and carry away His treasure.
