Why do we fail to recognise divinity in the world despite constantly perceiving it?

He is a fool who sees, yet does not recognise the reality.

Look at everything with divine feelings. Then only will you see Divinity in everyone.

But you see everything with a worldly outlook. You see the rope and mistake it for a serpent. Therefore, there is fear in you.

It is necessary for you to use your discrimination to know whether it is a rope or a snake. You mistake the rope as snake due to your delusion. The moment there is delusion, there arises fear. Because of fear, you run away.

When you see with the torch of discrimination, you will know it is not a snake, but a rope. When you come to know it is a rope, there is no more fear. Then you go close to the rope. When did fear go? The moment you came to know that it was a rope, there was no fear.

When the delusion goes, you have courage. Courage is fearlessness. Then you experience bliss.

Similarly, you should enquire and know the reality of the world. Is it mundane or divine? This is called Mimamsa (critical investigation).

- Divine Discourse, Apr 08, 1993

Outer vision leads only to delusion. Inner vision confers bliss.

What is the inner significance of ritual sacrifices? Can everyone perform sacrifices?

The sacred and fragrant articles offered and the precious gems that are placed in the sacrificial fire, are symbolic offerings which man should make in life.

He should offer his pure heart and good qualities such as Satya, Dharma, Shanti and Prema (Truth, Virtue, Peace, and Love) to the Divine.

The real spirit of giving to society and community the wealth, knowledge and skills, one possesses is the true yajna (sacrificial rite).

Without the spirit of sacrifice, the performance of external rituals has no meaning.

Life itself is a yajna. To make human life an oblation in the sacred fire of duties and actions is itself a yajna.

To get rid of one's bad qualities is yajna. Every individual who seeks to lead an ideal life, to achieve bliss and attain self-realisation, must cultivate the spirit of sacrifice.

Yajna is the means to lead one from sorrow to happiness, adversity to prosperity, darkness to light.

Human life can be worthwhile only when it is based on sacrifice or the quality of renunciation. Then, life becomes meaningful, and Divinity can also be experienced.

- Divine Discourse, Oct 16, 1983

Knowledge or strength or wealth, that is not used for the good of others, is useless.

Why are practice and discipline important for a spiritual aspirant?

We acquire everything through practice. Even walking, talking, reading and eating, are acquired through practice.

Most of them become part of our lives, even without our knowledge, just by practice.

A small example of this. Some old people keep rotating their japamala (rosary) for years together. This habit has become so mechanical that they do it even while speaking to others.

The root cause of habits is practice. Therefore, we have to practice good habits.

Just as bad habits do their work even unconsciously, good habits also do their work, thus making us think positively.

We have to practice living a truthful life in our mundane activities. Discipline and behaviour are imperative. Manners are the vital force of man.

We have lost all three today. The primary and most important faults in man are: we have no respect for elders, no love for our parents and no proper place for friends.

So, to retrieve all these, we have to develop good habits and beliefs.

- Divine Discourse, Mar 28, 1991

Man moves as fast as his mind, in the direction that the mind takes. To tame and train the mind, good habits and disciplines have to be sought.

What is the essential precept of every religion and spiritual master?

All noble souls have taught sacred things. They said, “Love all”. They did not preach hatred.

The Divine never tells anybody to kill others. No one has any right to kill the other because the same Atma is present in all.

In the name of God, people are committing heinous crimes. It is not good. Love all, Serve all.

You cannot always oblige but you can always speak obligingly. There is no Divine greater than love.

Love is Divine, He is love. Live in love.

Destroy wicked qualities. The mean-minded people try to attribute their meanness to Him. It is a sign of ignorance.

Do not pay heed to such people. Have faith in your own Self. Otherwise, you cannot have love for Him.

Due to defects in the modern education system, love is diminishing in man day by day. Hatred is on the rise.

Man is forgetting truth and thereby subjecting himself to danger. He has forgotten humanness by developing animal tendency.

True spirituality lies in destroying animal tendency and transforming humaness into Divinity. It is not possible to attain Divinity without getting rid of animality.

- Divine Discourse, Dec 25, 2001.

The more you love others, the greater will be the joy you experience. The more you develop hatred, the more miserable your life will be.

How can we develop love, patience, forbearance and forgiveness in ourselves, and how do we know we have it in us?

True and selfless love manifests as sacrifice. Such love knows no hatred.

It envelops the entire universe and is capable of drawing near even those who are seemingly far away.

It is Love that transforms the human into the Divine. It can transform pashu (a bestial person) into Pashupati (Divinity).

In the phenomenal world, you come across many shades and derivatives of this primordial love. You love your father, mother, brother, sister, friends and so on. In all such cases, there is always a tinge of selfishness somewhere or other.

Divine love, on the other hand, is totally free of even the slightest trace of selfishness. You must surrender to such love, become completely submerged by it and experience the bliss it confers.

For acquiring such Love, the quality of Kshama or forbearance is a vital necessity. Every individual must cultivate this noble quality.

Kshama is not achieved by reading books or learnt from an instructor. Nor can it be received as a gift from someone else.

This prime virtue - Kshama, can be acquired solely by self-effort, by facing squarely diverse problems, difficulties of various sorts, anxieties and suffering as well as sorrow.

- Divine Discourse, May 25, 2000

True Divinity is Kshama (forbearance) combined with Prema (Love).

How does divine love differ from worldly relationships, and what are its essential characteristics?

Prema (Love) is the prana (Life force) of man, and the prana itself is Prema.

One without love is like a lifeless corpse. Love is shown only to persons who are alive.

No one will love a corpse. Love and life are therefore interrelated and intimately connected.

In this worldly life, love manifests in several forms, such as the love between mother and son, husband and wife, and between relatives. This love based on physical relationships arises out of selfish motives and self-interest.

But the love of the Divine is devoid of any trace of self-interest. It is love for the sake of love alone. This is called Bhakti (devotion).

One characteristic of this love is to give and not to receive. Secondly, love knows no fear. Thirdly, it is only for love’s sake and not for a selfish motive.

All these three angles of love jointly connote prapatti (Surrender). When one revels in this attitude of prapatti, one experiences the bliss of the Divine. For this, the prime requisite is Kshama (forgiveness).

- Divine Discourse, Jan 01, 1994

A heart devoid of love is no better than a body without life.

Why should we be wary of the pests of jealousy and hatred?

Look at the functions of the sense organs. You may notice that even if one organ stops functioning in harmony, life will be limping.

When the mind conceives a thought, all organs coordinate to have the thought executed. If senses do not follow thoughts, life will become miserable.

When there is forbearance, all organs coordinate harmoniously and work in unison. Once the organs of the body, like eyes, ears, limbs, became jealous of the tongue, saying that they make all efforts to secure food but the tongue enjoys it.

The tongue merely tastes the food and passes only palatable items of food inside, which is converted by internal organs into energy-giving blood. The tongue does not retain it. But for this vital part played by the tongue, other organs would not be able to function at all.

When the other organs became jealous of the tongue and stopped sending food with a view to harming it, they spelt their own ruin by such action, as they could not function when there was no food and consequently no supply of energy for these organs to function.

Similarly, jealousy on the part of a person ultimately results in his own ruin!

- Divine Discourse, Jan 01, 1994

When you offer the flower of your heart to Him, it should be free from the pest of desire, hatred, envy, greed and the like.

What is that one quality, the absence of which leads to the total degradation of human life?

Kshama (forbearance) is the grandest and the noblest among virtues. It is all-encompassing.

The Scriptures contain many episodes that illustrate the disaster that befalls when Kshama is lost.

Jealousy is the first bad quality that makes its entry when Kshama makes its exit. The Scripture gives a graphic portrayal of how life that is otherwise smooth, can be totally shattered by jealousy.

Whereas Kshama can give complete protection, its absence can plunge one into distress and disaster.

Impatience breeds selfishness and promotes jealousy, which together spur infighting and divisive tendencies of various kinds.

The troubles countries are currently passing through are largely due to the absence of this noble quality of Kshama.

Impatience has ruined even very great spiritual aspirants. Kings were reduced to beggars. The absence of Kshama can make a Yogi into a rogi (sick one)!

Without Kshama, mankind becomes degraded and starts declining but if it has this quality, then it can progress by leaps and bounds.

- Divine Discourse, May 25, 2000

For spiritual progress and advancement, Kshama is the real basis or foundation.

How does the home environment influence the physical health and well-being of future generations?

The body has to be maintained in good condition, for it is only when embodied in this human container that man can realise Him.

The body is either strong or weak, an efficient instrument or an inefficient one, according to the food, recreations and habits of one’s parents.

Since the elders do not pay attention to these, the health of the children suffers; we have hospitals, dispensaries and clinics, in every street now, because disease has its hold on every family, in every home.

Even little children wear glasses; young people dye their hair, and many wear dentures.

The reason is, the atmosphere in the modern home is filled with artificiality, anxiety, envy, discontent, empty boasting, vain pomp, extravagance, falsehood and hypocrisy.

How can anyone growing up in this corrosive atmosphere be free from illness?

If the home is filled with the clean fragrance of contentment and peace, all its occupants will be happy and healthy.

The elders have, therefore, a great responsibility towards the generation that is coming up.

- Divine Discourse, Oct 05, 1967

Why should we maintain the body (deha) in good health? It is for the sake of realising the Dehi (Indweller Self).

What is the attitude we must cultivate towards trials and tribulations and why?

The virtue of Kshama (forbearance) is best cultivated under adverse circumstances and one must therefore gladly welcome troubles instead of regarding them as unwelcome.

Difficulties help one to nurse and build the capacity for patience.

Thus, times of distress offer the ideal opportunity for the development of patience and forbearance.

In fact, pain and Kshama go together because Kshama grows best in an environment of sorrow and misery.

However, because of mental weakness as well as ignorance, we invariably shun painful experiences and distress.

You should not be weak; be brave and welcome troubles. Let them come, the more the merrier.

It is only with such a courageous attitude that you would be able to bring out the Kshama hidden within you.

- Divine Discourse, May 25, 2000

Pleasure has no separate existence. It is the fruit of pain. This basic truth is not recognised by man.
