<Research>Daiwa Raises Apple (AAPL.US) TP to US$230 as Firm May Become Leader in AI Phone Category

Apple Inc. (AAPL.US)'s results for third financial quarter ended June beat expectations, with revenue rising 4.9% YoY to US$85.8 billion, beating market consensus of US$84.4 billion, Daiwa released a research report saying.

EPS also beat market expectations. Daiwa believed that Apple's AI is the key to increasing average selling prices and a 2025 upgrade cycle.

Daiwa remained bullish on the Group as it is poised to become a leader in the AI handset area, and raised its target price to US$230 from US$210, with rating kept at Outperform.

Apple: The Magnificent Seven stock best avoided right now

The recently enacted Digital Markets Act could damage the dominance of its App Store in Europe by forcing the company to support third-party app stores.

Additionally, Apple is losing smartphone market share to local competitors in China.
Regional iPhone shipments fell 3% in the second quarter despite an acceleration in the broader market. That is concerning because China accounted for 19% of Apple's revenue last year.

Finally, Apple lacks a clear-cut strategy where AI is concerned. It plans to introduce Apple Intelligence in October, bringing AI features to iPhones and MacBooks. But those features are free and, apart from potentially driving product upgrades, management has yet to detail plans for future monetization.

Apple reported modest financial results in the June quarter.

Revenue rose 4.8% to $85.8 billion, and GAAP net income increased 7.6% to $21.4 billion. Active devices hit a record high across all products and geographic segments, services revenue climbed 14% to a record $24.2 billion, and gross margin expanded 180 basis points. In short, Apple is successfully drawing consumers to its hardware ecosystem and monetizing them with high-margin services.

The problem is valuation. Apple stock currently trades at 31.8 times earnings, a premium to the three-year average of 27.8 times earnings. That price tag looks especially expensive, given that Wall Street expects Apple to grow earnings per share at 9% annually over the next three years.

That rich valuation may explain why Warren Buffett has slashed Berkshire Hathaway's stake in Apple in recent quarters. Investors should avoid this stock right now.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) – Thursday, August 1

After the market closed, Apple announced fiscal third-quarter earnings that exceeded expectations.

The company reported $1.40 earnings per share on $85.78 billion in revenue, or 11.11% year-over-year earnings growth and 4.9% year-over-year revenue growth.

Analysts were expecting $1.35 earnings per share on $84.53 billion in revenue, so Apple reported a slight earnings and revenue surprise.

Apple’s revenue was driven by iPhone sales, which accounted for 46% of the company’s total sales during the quarter. iPhone revenue came in at $39.29 billion, just beating expectations for $38.81 billion. However, it represented a nearly 1% year-over-year decline.

Apple’s Services division, which includes hardware warranties and subscriptions like Apple TV+, reported $24.21 billion in sales, representing 14.1% growth from the same quarter a year ago. This was slightly above analyst estimates calling for $24.01 billion in revenue.

Its Mac division reported $7 billion in sales, up 2.5% from the same quarter a year ago.

Apple’s iPad division saw the biggest increase, with sales rising 24% year-over-year to $7.16 billion. The strength was due to the release of new, updated iPads for the first time since 2022.
