Apple reported a 21 per cent gain in personal computer (PC) shipments in the second quarter, the biggest jump among global PC makers as part of a budding industry recovery that produced a second consecutive period of growth.

Worldwide shipments of desktops and laptops increased 3 per cent from a year earlier in the period ended in June, according to a report on Tuesday (Jul 9) from IDC, an industry research firm.

Apple and Acer, which posted a jump of about 14 per cent, saw the largest growth in shipments among major manufacturers.

The PC industry experienced historic declines in recent years after consumers, businesses and schools bought new machines during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, then held off on replacements.

The results show that a cycle of new purchases is underway, said Amit Daryanani, an analyst at Evercore ISI.

Computer makers have touted AI PCs, a new type of device designed specifically to run AI tasks, as helping fuel a new wave of upgrades.

IDC has said only about 3 per cent of PCs shipped this year will be AI-optimised.

Apple reported fiscal third-quarter earnings on Thursday that beat Wall Street expectations, with overall revenue rising 5%.

Apple reported $21.45 billion in net income during the quarter, versus $19.88 billion, or $1.26 per share, in the year-ago period.

Apple’s most important business remains the iPhone, which accounted for about 46% of the company’s total sales during the quarter.

While the tech giant beat LSEG estimates, the product line still declined about 1% year over year, to $39.29 billion in revenue.

Apple expects similar overall revenue growth in the current quarter, company finance chief Luca Maestri said on a call with analysts.

Apple also expects Services to grow at about the same rate as the previous three quarters, which was about 14%.

The company sees operating expenditures between $14.2 billion and $14.4 billion in the current quarter, Maestri added, with gross margin of between 45.5% and 46.5%.

Apple Inc - Stock Analyst Research
Target Price* 215.00
Recommendation REDUCE

Apple Inc. – Supercycle unlikely in 2024

9M24 revenue/PATMI was in line with expectations at 73%/77% of our FY24e forecasts.

3Q24 revenue growth of 5% YoY is led by strong services business (14% YoY)

We expect a soft 4Q24 for AAPL due to ongoing weak iPhone sales in China and slower-than-expected global iPhone refresh cycles. However, a significant iPhone refresh super cycle is expected in FY25.

We maintain a NEUTRAL rating. We decrease our target price to US$215 (prev. US$220.00), with a WACC of 6.5% and a terminal growth rate of 3%.

We raised service margin by 2% to account for the margin improvement and cut FY24e iPhone unit estimates/revenue/PATMI by 4%/4%/2% to account for the delay in iPhone super cycle.
