Amazon.com said on Monday (Oct 10) it will invest more than 1 billion euros (S$1.4 billion) over the next five years in electric vans, trucks and low-emission package hubs across Europe, accelerating its drive to achieve net-zero carbon.

The retailer said the investment was also aimed at spurring innovation across the transportation industry and encouraging more public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs).

The US online retailer said the investment would help its electric van fleet in Europe more than triple from 3,000 vehicles to more than 10,000 by 2025.

The company did not say what percentage of its European last-mile delivery fleet is electric today but said those 3,000 zero-emission vans delivered over 100 million packages in 2021.

Amazon said it also hopes to purchase more than 1,500 electric heavy goods vehicles – used for “middle-mile” shipments to package hubs – in the coming years.

Amazon’s largest electric van order is for 100,000 vehicles from Rivian Automotive through 2025.

The company said that alongside EVs, it will invest in thousands of chargers at facilities across Europe. The retailer said it will also invest in doubling its European network of “micro-mobility” hubs from more than 20 cities today.

Amazon has used those centrally located hubs to run new delivery methods including electric cargo bikes or on-foot deliveries to cut emissions. The company plans to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040.

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN US) - Riding on an unparalleled ecosystem

Amazon.com Inc (AMZN, stock code: AMZN US) is well-positioned as a market leader in e-commerce and public cloud businesses, where the secular trends remain in early to mid-stages and growth continues to be strong.

We expect AMZN’s e-commerce profit to recover over the next 2 years on the back of stronger focus on cost control and more conservative CAPEX plans by the management.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) continues to enjoy structural growth, driven by higher penetration of IT spending into public cloud segment.

Risk-reward of AMZN is in a favourable position (vs the long-term cycle) as both valuations and earnings expectations have come significantly off the peak reached during the pandemic.

We favour AMZN as an earnings turnaround and structural growth play over the long term.

While the share price should trend towards our fair value (FV) over the long term, we are cognizant of the possibility of near-term volatility given an unstable macro background and believe that long term investors should gradually add exposure on weakness ahead. BUY.

Amazon shoppers appear to have shrugged off promotions for discounted phone chargers and air fryers during this week’s Prime Day-like sales bonanza.

The 48-hour event, dubbed the Prime Early Access sale, ran through Wednesday.

For Amazon, the event tested how members of its Prime subscription program would respond to two major discount events in the same year, after the company’s main Prime Day sale in July.

Amazon on Thursday said that tens of millions of Prime members ordered more than 100 million items from third-party vendors.

It disclosed little else about the results, such as sales figures. But data collected by third-party analysts gives a deeper look into how the Prime Day sequel went over with shoppers compared to Amazon’s sales event in July.

Sales during this week’s event seemed “lighter” compared to Prime Day in July, Bank of America analysts said.

They estimate Amazon brought in $5.7 billion in revenue from the Prime Early Access Sale vs. $7.5 billion in July.

Commerce data company Klover said it observed slower spending and volume, noting transaction frequency was down 30% between the July event and October event.

Comment: The Prime Early Access Sale event faces tough comparison to this year’s Prime Day, which was referred as the “biggest Prime Day event” by Amazon.

We suspect consumers may have already spent their shopping budget during the July event and decided not to make any more purchases.

Nonetheless, we feel that the October event has helped in boosting Amazon’s 4Q22 performance and clearing the currently high level of inventory.

Our NEUTRAL rating and target price of US$133.00 for Amazon is maintained.

Amazon (AMZN)

Morningstar analyst Dan Romanoff assigns the company a wide moat and puts fair value at $192, 66% above recent trading at $116.

“Amazon dominates its served markets, notably e-commerce and cloud services,” he wrote in a commentary. “It benefits from numerous competitive advantages and has emerged as the clear e-commerce leader.”

Meanwhile, “the firm’s advertising business is already large and continues to scale, offering an attractive option for marketers looking to access a vast audience with a variety of proprietary data points about consumers.”
