Walmart (WMT)

When economy is bad, alot of US consumers will switch from premium retailers to retailers like Walmart and Target.

Between the store layout for a Target store and a Walmart store, a Target store wins hands down everytime.
"If a speculator is correct half of the time, he is hitting a good average. Even being right 3 or 4 times out of 10 should yield a person a fortune if he has the sense to cut his losses quickly on the ventures where he has been wrong" - Bernard Baruch

Stats of the week: 22%

Gain in Wal-Mart shares this year, making it the top-performing stock in the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 2008. It's one of only five stocks in the 30 stock average with positive gains in 2008.

Not vested. From Brian Hunt:-

IT'S STILL A BULL MARKET IN CHEAP

Germany... China... Israel... Canada... Korea... Russia... Austria.

This isn't a roster of the United Nations... but a list of world stock markets scraping new 52-week lows. Nearly every oil, mining, and infrastructure stock you can name is at a new low as well.

In other words, there isn't much working in the stock market right now. One of the few uptrends we can find is the "bull market in cheap"... the year-long uptrend in shares of Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart is the world champion of cost-cutting and delivering products cheaply.

Walmart goes online with groceries

Walmart has started listing the groceries it stocks online in a Beta section of their website listing thousands of food and other grocery-type products. The site also communicates nutritional information to consumers.

The website lists items ranging from prepared salads and cooked shrimp to dog food and lipstick listed on the site, which is the second busiest on the Internet after Amazon. While the listed products are not available for home delivery they are linked to a "search in store" facility, allowing consumers to check availability.

Industry watchers suspect that this could be the retailer's first move towards settling up an online grocery store.

WMT - What's The Deal ?

I like simple things, as much as I am put off by unnecessarily complex characters I meet, fortunately only very occasionally.

Trading is in itself complex enough, no need to add more complications to that.

If I had only one word to describe WalMart, it would be...... "NTUC". It is nothing more than a successful group, with superior purchasing and hence bargaining power, and they sell almost anything you'll need in the cause of living; well almost everything.

So, if I think WMT is nothing more than the our version of NTUC, would I buy into its stock as an investment? Yes and No.

Yes, if I am in it for the dividend, for the income, strictly speaking. But No, I wouldnt add any WMT into my investment portfolio, if I am looking for year in year out profit growth, consistent top line revenue generation year on year.

So, my decision to invest will be based on my intentions of my investment. Is yours?

my fear is consumerism is going to be lacklustre for some months ahead...trade it for the upside breakout maybe...but a "buy and hold" mentality...i refrain...
