Walmart e-commerce and comparable sales jump in second quarter

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Walmart Inc (N:WMT) on Thursday reported a 40 percent rise in U.S. e-commerce sales during the second quarter, faster than the previous quarter's 33 percent advance.

Walmart's e-commerce performance has become the most widely anticipated metric after online sales growth slowed during the crucial holiday quarter, fueling investor concern over its ability to compete with e-commerce rival Amazon.com Inc (O:AMZN).

Sales at U.S. stores open at least a year rose 4.5 percent, excluding fuel, in the second quarter. That exceeded analyst forecasts of 2.3 percent, according to research firm Consensus Metrix. Walmart said the comparable sales increase was the highest in more than a decade.

Adjusted earnings per share increased to $1.29 per share, beating expectations of $1.22 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

WHEN THE ECONOMY SOURS, AMERICA SHOPS HERE

Walmart (WMT) is a $370 billion discount retailer. It sells a host of products at affordable prices, at around 11,500 stores in 27 countries and online.

Lots of folks shop there no matter what's happening with the economy... But when money becomes tighter, Walmart's low prices also draw in customers who used to shop at pricier stores.

To meet explosive demand due to COVID-19, the company has recently hired an average of 5,000 new workers every day.

It is up 31% in less than a year... while the S&P 500 Index is down slightly over the same period. That's the value of protecting your portfolio with antifragile companies like Walmart...

Walmart (WMT)

Walmart is the biggest retailer in the world when it comes to brick-and-mortar stores. Although, if you include online shopping, Amazon is the champ.

But Walmart is doing everything it can to cover that ground as well. This month it’s planning to launch its full attack on Amazon Prime, with Walmart Plus.

This service is expected to offer free same-day shipping of groceries and products, early access to sales, discounts to gas at Walmart gas stations and (for some) free 2-hour delivery access.

All that for an annual fee of $98. Prime costs about $20 more a year.

This is going to be a very interesting holiday season as the two U.S. retail titans vie for primacy.

WMT stock is up 11% year to date and has a 1.6% dividend.

Walmart (WMT)

Walmart is another great company whose share price has underperformed.

Year to date, WMT stock is down 2%. In the past month, the stock has slumped 3%. Over a longer time period of 12 months, the share price is up only 4%.

Like Amazon, Walmart has performed admirably during the pandemic as its brick-and-mortar locations remained opened and its online business accelerated. The company’s annual e-commerce revenue now tops $75 billion.

Walmart is also a dividend aristocrat. The company has increased its annual payout to shareholders every years since it first issued a 5-cent dividend back in 1974, and has maintained the dividend through good economic times and bad. Walmart’s current annual dividend stands at $2.20 per share for a yield of 1.53%.

Walmart says it is focused on improving its global supply chains, enhancing its e-commerce offerings and improving its omnichannel selling platform, all of which should benefit the company and its stock in coming quarters.

The median price target of 32 analysts who follow Walmart calls for the stock to climb 19% in coming months to $170 per share. This blue-chip stock is a buy.
