Medical glove exports face more delays amid shipping container shortage

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia's medical glove makers face weeks of delays in delivering products to customers abroad due to a global shortage of shipping containers, hampering their ability to meet demand during the coronavirus crisis, industry officials said.

Supramaniam Shanmugam, president of the Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA), told Reuters on Friday the container shortage had eased after year-end festivities but the situation had yet to return to normal, with exports by glove makers still facing delays of two to five weeks.

Malaysia, the world's biggest producer of medical gloves, has been racing to meet skyrocketing demand due to the pandemic.

MARGMA said the lead time to deliver gloves to customers had increased by more than six months even as manufacturers ramped up production to cope with new orders.

Industry officials say the situation could return to normal by the end of February, after previously estimating export delays could continue until March.

"There are more empty containers available now. However, there may not be enough vessel space and we need to manage this till February," Shanmugam said.

China saw a container crunch at the end of last year, sending cargo costs to record highs and hampering the ability of manufacturers to meet fast-recovering global goods orders.

The Malaysian National Shippers' Council said its members faced severe container shortages in the second half of last year and were still scrambling to secure space on vessels. It does not see the situation easing this quarter.

The shortage drove up freight rates by 300%-400%. The council's Chairman Andy Seo said higher rates were becoming the benchmark with exporters ready to pay a premium.

"Members have indicated that container booking requests get cancelled by the shipping lines at the very last minute unless manufacturers were able to pay higher freight rates, he said.

Thailand ramps up medical glove production as it chases Malaysia

Companies set to invest over $800m in new capacity as global demand surges

Thailand has 19 rubber glove factories with a total production capacity of 46 billion pieces per year, 90% of which was, typically, for exports, with the kingdom accounting for around 13% of global supply, according to the Thai Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association.

New investments in the industry are expected to expand Thailand's share of the market to 20% by 2022.

HLIB cuts target prices on glove makers following shift in valuation method

by Arjuna Chandran Shankar

The research house explained that it changed its valuation methodology from a straight price-to-earnings (PE) multiple to a modified discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation.

For the remainder of 2021, it is expecting vaccination demand for gloves to more than offset the decline in demand used for testing.

It noted that ASPs are expected to remain elevated around US$115 to US$140 per one thousand pieces for the time being, with a decline possibly happening only in the fourth quarter of 2021 (4Q21).

The research house added that even if global supply is expected to rise by around 20% this year from existing players ramping up production capacities and newer players entering the market, there will likely still be a supply shortage of around 12.4 billion pieces in 2021.

Malaysian glove makers are ‘too cheap to ignore’ after recent fall in share price, analyst says

by Yen Nee Lee

Shares of Top Glove, the world’s largest rubber gloves producer, have fallen 17.7% this year as of Monday’s close.

Its smaller peers Hartalega, Supermax and Kossan have dropped between 18% and 30%.

The analyst said the jump in average selling prices of gloves is not sustainable, and forecast a 30% to 35% fall in prices in 2022. Still, prices will likely remain above pre-pandemic levels for the next two to three years at least,

Frost and Sullivan and commissioned by Top Glove, which projected demand for disposable gloves to increase by an average 15% annually for the next five years.

Malaysia’s rubber glove revenue to grow 8% to RM38b this year, says MARGMA

by Justin Lim

KUALA LUMPUR (March 15): Malaysia's export revenue is expected to grow at a slower pace of 8% to RM38 billion in 2021, compared with a 103% growth last year, said the Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA), taking into account shorter lead time and lower average selling prices (ASPs).

The export revenue was at RM35.3 billion last year, a big leap from RM17.35 billion in 2019, due to abnormally strong demand for rubber gloves as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

MARGMA president Dr Supramaniam Shanmugam said export revenue is expected to continue growing, driven by robust demand globally as he expects demand will continue to outstrip supply until 2022.

“The estimate will change as time goes on. We will look at this estimate every quarter. Looking at the demand cycle, orders in hands and lead time [for glove delivery], we are looking at a projected export revenue for rubber gloves for this year at RM38 billion,” he said.

He noted that the export revenue estimate had also taken account the fall in ASPs as market observers expect demand to normalise as countries have kick-started their vaccination programmes.

According to him, the manufacturers’ lead time to meet orders is shorter at seven months currently, compared with 10 to 12 months in the first and second quarter last year.

“We have taken that into account in our RM38 billion export value target, and I think the target is totally achievable. If we were about to do vibrant or robust selling prices like in the past, we would be talking about RM42 billion [of export revenue] this year,” he noted.

Meanwhile, MARGMA said global supply of rubber gloves is expected to be 420 billion gloves this year, with Malaysia supplying the bulk or 67% (280 billion gloves). The rest will be supplied by Thailand (18%), China (10%) and Indonesia (3%).

Rubber Gloves – Malaysia
Confluence Of Factors Prompts Downgrade To MARKET WEIGHT

Industry prospects remain intact against a backdrop of undemanding valuations.

But we acknowledge that:
a) unparalleled share price surge,
b) normalising valuations after peak quarterly earnings, and
c) negative sentiment permeating through the sector may be too steep to overcome.

We downgrade the sector to MARKET WEIGHT from OVERWEIGHT.

We normalise our target prices based on 2023 valuations and dividend related windfall earnings. Top pick: Top Glove.
