I Wouldn’t Touch This Well-Known Stock With a 10-Foot Pole

by Jody Chudley

My skepticism doesn’t mean that I’m bearish on the electric car.

I believe its widespread adoption is coming even faster than most people anticipate.

Of course, that means there is huge sales growth coming for companies that manufacture it…

But Tesla does not own the electric car business.

Yet its market cap suggests that it has been granted a 100% monopoly.

Bear bets on Tesla shares tumbling from highs of US$1,592

Tesla shares could start to see a reversal in the fourth quarter after a huge rally this year, as the “flaws in the growth story” begin to show, according to one major bear, CNBC reports.

Barclays auto analyst Brian Johnson, who put a US$300 price target on Tesla in February, questioned the outlook for the electric carmaker, despite the company posting second-quarter earnings that beat market expectations.

First, he said that while Tesla CEO Elon Musk has promised “industry-leading” margins, according to its earnings results released Wednesday, that is not likely to happen.

“That’s clearly not what he (Musk) is going to do, he is trying to do revenue growth,” Johnson told CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia.”

The analyst then went on to say that if sales of Tesla’s Model 3 sedans produced in China were stripped out, revenue from its “Fremont factory actually appear to be down 30 percent.”

Finally, Johnson said that sales of the Model Y crossover SUV, which started being delivered to customers in March, could eat into sales of the Model 3.

“At some point we think that the growth narrative could come undone. That will be perhaps closer to second half or 4Q when it becomes apparent that Model Y might be cannibalizing Model 3 sales and when we see just what the run rate of demand for Model 3 really is,” Johnson said.

Tesla’s share price has been on a tear in 2020. Shares are up over 280 percent this year and closed at US$1,592.33 on Wednesday. Johnson is not suggesting his US$300 price target will be hit in the fourth quarter, but is suggesting a fall in the price could take place.

“So I’m not under ... (the) illusion that even though my US$300 is based on valuation of this as a automaker that the market is going to agree with me … anytime soon,” he said.

Johnson also took aim at Tesla’s goal to deliver 500,000 vehicles this year. In the first half of the year, Tesla delivered 179,387 cars.

“He (Musk) did say half a million was still the target but my target is to finish a marathon in under three hours and I don’t think I’m going to get there,” Johnson said.

Chamath Palihapitiya says Tesla’s renewable energy push could make it worth trillions

Chamath Palihapitiya, the Sri Lanka-born chairman of Virgin Galactic and founder of Social Capital. He says Tesla stock is now going to represent the totality around decarbonization and sustainability.

Social Capital Chief Executive Chamath Palihapitiya told CNBC on Thursday that Tesla's growth is much more than about electric cars: its renewable energy components could make Elon Musk’s company worth trillions.

“It is the leading hedge when it comes to electrification and decarbonization. This is no longer about cars, that’s the first wave of growth. I think people are pricing in the evisceration of traditional autos and an enormous shift to [electric vehicles], of which Tesla will get the disproportionate share,” the Sri Lanka-born Palihapitiya said in a “Squawk Box” interview. “This is worth trillions of dollars.”

Tesla has been on a tear. A year ago, Tesla’s shares were trading around US$260. Now, they’re above US$1,500. Earlier this month, Tesla became the world’s most valuable automaker when its market cap surpassed Toyota’s for the first time.

On July 1, Tesla had a market cap of $206.5 billion compared with Toyota’s US$202 billion. As of Thursday morning, Tesla’s market cap is US$295.3 billion.

The company also just reported its first full year of profitability on a GAAP basis.

Tesla’s energy businesses so far have taken a back seat when compared with its key autos unit, but Musk has been pushing toward growth.

In its second-quarter earnings report, Tesla said its energy storage business Megapack generated a profit for the first time.

“What Tesla is going to do with their battery packs and software will all of a sudden allow each of us to be in the energy business, as well,” Palihapitiya said.

“Again, people will get angry, they will not understand, they will try to push back, and they will be wrong. And what’s going to happen is this stock is now going to represent the totality around decarbonization and sustainability, so it was really great to own this thing around cars for the first few years, I get it.

But now I underwrite this stock as a push toward decarbonization, towards unregulated energy, and towards the ability for all of us to become our little micro utilities.”
