What We Can Control

What happens when we sit is none of our business.

The practice is to accept whatever arises instead of trying to control our experience.

What we can control is our wise effort to be present with what is.

What are the two important qualities we must develop in our lives?

It is essential to develop an intimate relationship with the Divine. You will be charged with divine energy when you achieve connection with Divinity.

Living in the company of the Divine is true good company (Satsanga). Good company leads to detachment, detachment makes one free from delusion, freedom from delusion leads to steadiness of mind and steadiness of mind confers liberation.

But today, one does not have a steady mind. All the time the mind wavers like a mad monkey.

When you say, ‘my body’, ‘my mind’, etc., all these are different from you.

Then question yourself, who am I? The same principle of ‘I’ is present in everybody, right from a pauper to a millionaire. In order to understand this ‘I’ principle, you have to develop the spirit of sacrifice.

- Divine Discourse, Jun 10, 2001.

Everyone should cultivate a spirit of sacrifice that grows with you, as you grow older.

Make Space for Others’ Growth

Rather than assuming you will know how people will act, take a deep breath and open yourself to the possibility that today is a new day.

How should we prepare for the tests in our lives?

Do not grieve that the Divine is testing you and putting you to the ordeal of undergoing the tests, for it is only when you are tested that you can assure yourself of success or become aware of your limitations.

You can then concentrate on the subjects in which you are deficient and pay more intensive attention, so that you can pass in them too when you are tested again.

Good students don’t study for the examination at the last moment; they study well in advance and be ready with the needed knowledge and the courage and confidence born out of that knowledge and skill.

What you have studied well in advance must be revised over and over in the mind, just before going to the examination; that is all the preparation that is necessary! This is the pathway to victory.

- Divine Discourse, Shivarathri, March 1963.

The Divine bestows a favour on you, when He decides to test you, for He is impressed by
your achievement and wants to stamp His seal of approval.

Discovering the Best Way to Live

To think in a more contemplative way, means to slow down and recover our rootedness on Earth, which allows us to ponder and question what kind of beings we are and how best to live in this world.

During these difficult times, how should each and every devotee serve the world?

"You want to conquer the three worlds, but you are failing to conquer your senses!" Be aware!

If you have not mastered your internal enemies like anger, hatred, etc., how can you ever hope to conquer your external enemies?

The inner enemies can be conquered only in one way, through love! It is essential to make our life worthwhile by practicing love, by subduing the six internal enemies (desire, anger, envy, greed, ego and lust) and dedicate all our actions to the Divine.

The world is in turmoil. At this juncture, it is the duty of each and every devotee to realise the Fatherhood of the Divine and the brotherhood of mankind and counteract the evil forces which are inflicting innumerable troubles on mankind.

Resorting to the potent weapon of love, each one should try to serve humanity to eradicate the forces of violence and unrighteousness which are rampant today.

- Divine Discourse, Nov 23, 1986.

Righteous action and control of the senses are essential for the cultivation of universal love and goodness.

On the occasion of celebrating brotherhood in India, how should we offer our adoration to our brothers and sisters?

We say, all are our brothers and sisters, but how many are translating this ideal into action?

Our actions should be in harmony with our words. Jesus taught “Brotherhood of man and the Fatherhood of God”. This truth is also the culture of our country.

You may not have material wealth; it is enough if you have self-confidence and self-respect. Respect everybody.

Offer your salutations to elders wholeheartedly. What is the inner meaning of salutations? When you do salutations, you join your palms and bring them close to your heart.

The five fingers of each hand symbolise the five senses of action and five senses of perception. These ten senses should follow the dictates of your heart (conscience). That is true salutations.

Everyday, sow the seeds of good thoughts, water them with good actions and remove the weeds of wicked qualities. Only then will you reap the crop of bliss.

- Divine Discourse, May 16, 2002.

Good Character is built through the constant practice of good actions.

Using Your Head and Your Heart

If your head can give priority to finding the causes for true happiness, and your heart can learn to embrace those causes—then the training of the mind can go far.

What we must all strive to inherit and share?

The Divine has endowed you with all his wealth and divine potentialities. You are inheritors of this wealth.

You have to discover what that wealth is ie. pure, selfless and boundless love. This is the truth.

You must inherit this love, fill yourselves with it and offer it to the world. This is your supreme responsibility.

What is it that you can offer to the Divine who is omnipotent, omnipresent and all-knowing? The various things you offer to Him are given out of delusion.

To realise the Divine, Love is the easiest path. Just as you can see the moon only with the light of the moon, the Divine, who is the Embodiment of Love, can be reached through Love.

Regard Love as your life breath. Love was the first quality to emerge in the process of creation. All other qualities came after it. Therefore, fill your hearts with love and base your life on it!

- Divine Discourse, Nov 23, 1986.

Tame your mind to serve the intellect and not become a slave of your senses. It must discriminate and detach itself from the body.

Finding Silence in All You Do

There are moments when you think you’re silent and all around is silent but talking is going on all the time inside your head.

That’s not silence.

The practice is how to find silence in all the activities you do.
