China’s Coronavirus Outbreak
Potential Macroeconomic Repercussions

Having seen an exponential surge in infections and reported deaths over the past week, the Chinese government has responded with lockdowns of cities to extending the Lunar New Year holidays.

Drawing parallels from the SARS epidemic, our basecase scenario would see GDP growth fall by 0.5ppt and 1.0ppt in 1Q20 and 2Q20 respectively as fewer working days and social distancing measures (which lead to reduced activities) weigh on the economy.

Chinese Authorities Hide True Scale of Deadly Outbreak From Citizens, Fueling Crisis

BY NICOLE HAO

Ma Xiaowei, the director of China’s National Health Commission, gave us the instruction:
Politics is the first priority; then it’s safety; the third priority is science,” Meng said.

An insider told the Chinese-language Epoch Times on Jan. 24 that China’s CDC manipulated the number of confirmed cases by controlling the number of diagnosis kits available to hospitals.

The company quoted the hospital’s response: “We don’t have a diagnosis kit, and we don’t accept patients who are not confirmed through diagnosis.”

Chinese independent media Significant People reported on Jan. 24 that Wuhan First Hospital, No. 6 Hospital of Wuhan, Wuhan Red Cross Hospital, and Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital are designated hospitals for treating coronavirus, but they are all rejecting patients due to insufficient supply of diagnosis kits.

WHO declares China coronavirus that’s killed more than 200 a global health emergency

“Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems and which are ill-prepared to deal with it”.

"The continued increase in cases and the evidence of human-to-human transmission outside of China are, of course, most deeply disturbing".

There are more than 12,100 suspected cases in China that are either awaiting test results or haven’t been tested yet, on top of the 8,137 that have already been confirmed in the country.

Although the coronavirus doesn’t appear to be as deadly as SARS, which had a mortality rate of about 11%, it is spreading significantly faster.

The illness produces a range of symptoms, with about 20% of the patients developing severe illnesses, including pneumonia and respiratory failure.

WHO officials said it’s transmitted through human contact, in droplets through sneezing or through touching germs left on inanimate objects.

(How did the medical staffs get infected if they are wearing protective medical wear???)

Meanwhile, a hospital in Xinyu, Jiangxi, has shut down after 14 of its staff were confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus, the deputy director of the Chinese Centre for Disease Control Cheng Huijian said on Saturday.
Forty staff at Number Four Hospital in the city had been isolated and its health commission director Jian Guisheng told Thepaper.cn that 15 of the 17 new confirmed cases involved hospital staff.
