What should we do to transform our hearts into an abode for the Divine?

Each one of you must make your own heart a holy place.

Transformation must begin from this very moment. Analyse your words, deeds and thoughts, and get rid of the evil ones that harm you and others. Cultivate fortitude, firm peace and speaking the truth.

Presently, your mind flutters and squats on all and sundry objects in the Universe. It refuses to stay only on one idea - the Divine.

Like the fly that sits on fair and foul, denies itself the opportunity of sitting on a hot cinder, your mind too flees from all thoughts of the Divine.

The fly will be destroyed when it sits on fire; so too your mind will be destroyed, when it dwells on the Divine.

Desire is the very same stuff of which the mind is made; when mind becomes non-existent, you become free.

Desires cease, when the Divine seizes the mind.

- Divine Discourse, Sep 26, 1965.

When the Divine enters the mind, desire has no place therein.

Ideology prevents action

The world is always close to catastrophe. But it seems to be closer now.

Seeing this approaching catastrophe, most of us take shelter in idea. We think that this catastrophe, this crisis, can be solved by an ideology.

Ideology is always an impediment to direct relationship, which prevents action. We want peace only as an idea, but not as an actuality.

We want peace on the verbal level which is only on the thinking level, though we proudly call it the intellectual level. But the word peace is not peace.

Peace can only be when the confusion which you and another make ceases. We are attached to the world of ideas and not to peace.

We search for new social and political patterns and not for peace; we are concerned with the reconciliation of effects and not in putting aside the cause of war.

This search will bring only answers conditioned by the past. This conditioning is what we call knowledge, experience; and the new changing facts are translated, interpreted, according to this knowledge. So, there is conflict between what is and the experience that has been.

The past, which is knowledge, must ever be in conflict with the fact, which is ever in the present. So, this will not solve the problem but will perpetuate the conditions that have created the problem.

Action without ideation

The idea is the result of the thought process, the thought process is the response of memory, and memory is always conditioned.

Memory is always in the past, and that memory is given life in the present by a challenge.

Memory has no life in itself; it comes to life in the present when confronted by a challenge. And all memory, whether dormant or active, is conditioned, is it not?

Therefore, there has to be quite a different approach. You have to find out for yourself, inwardly, whether you are acting on an idea, and if there can be action without ideation.

What role has emotion in life?

How do emotions come into being? Very simple. They come into being through stimuli, through the nerves.

You put a pin into me, I jump; you flatter me and I am delighted; you insult me and I don’t like it.

Through our senses emotions come into being. And most of us function through our emotion of pleasure; obviously, sir.

You like to be recognized as a Hindu. Then you belong to a group, to a community, to a tradition, however old; and you like that, with the Gita, the Upanishads and the old traditions, mountain high.

And the Muslim likes his and so on. Our emotions have come into being through stimuli, through environment, and so on. It is fairly obvious.

What role has emotion in life? Is emotion life? You understand? Is pleasure love? Is desire love? If emotion is love, there is something that changes all the time. Right? Don’t you know all that?

... So one has to realize that emotions, sentiment, enthusiasm, the feeling of being good, and all that have nothing whatsoever to do with real affection, compassion.

All sentiment, emotions have to do with thought and therefore lead to pleasure and pain. Love has no pain, no sorrow, because it is not the outcome of pleasure or desire.

What is the special gift each one of us earned from the Divine?

The body is the temple, it is said. You are going about with a temple, where the Divine is in the innermost shrine.

The body is not a mass of flesh and bone; it is a medium for mantras (sacred words or formulae) which save when meditated upon.

It is a sacred instrument earned after long ages of struggle, equipped with reason and emotion, capable of being used for deliverance from grief and evil.

Honour it as such and keep it in good condition, so that it might serve that high purpose; maintain it even more carefully than these brick houses, and always preserve the conviction that it is an instrument and nothing more.

Use it for just the purpose for which it has been designed and given.

- Divine Discourse, Feb 03, 1964.

The urgent need of the hour is for you to inquire what is true, pure and permanent.

What is the connection between Unity-Purity-Divinity?

You should have single-minded devotion towards the Divine. Your faith should be total and unconditional. If your faith is unsteady with ‘bumps and jumps’, you will be confused and will become restless.

Keep your desires under control. Limitless desires will take you away from Divinity. Annihilation of desires will lead you to the principle of unity.

You should continuously develop virtues and lead a good life. Understand the purpose of education and act accordingly. Only then will your birth as a human being be meaningful.

One electric bulb can provide illumination to many. Likewise, a heart filled with love can illumine many lives.

The educated should not look down upon the uneducated. If they are truly educated, they will treat everyone equally and develop unity.

Where there is unity, there is purity. When unity and purity are present, you are bound to experience Divinity.

Love is the basis for unity. Know that if differences crop-up, pure love is absent.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 14, 2006.

True spirituality consists in promoting human unity through harmonious living and sharing the joy with one and all.

Beyond the noise of words

Listening is an art not easily come by but in it, there is beauty and great understanding.

We listen with the various depths of our being, but our listening is always with a preconception or from a particular point of view.

We do not listen simply; there is always the intervening screen of our own thoughts, conclusions, and prejudices. ...

To listen there must be an inward quietness, a freedom from the strain of acquiring, a relaxed attention.

This alert yet passive state is able to hear what is beyond the verbal conclusion. Words confuse; they are only the outward means of communication; but to commune beyond the noise of words, there must be in listening an alert passivity.

Those who love may listen; but it is extremely rare to find a listener. Most of us are after results, achieving goals; we are forever overcoming and conquering, and so there is no listening. It is only in listening that one hears the song of the words.

What is the surest way to accomplish our goals?

From today onwards, develop noble feelings. Follow the sacred path. Then your future will certainly be safe and secure.

Happiness lies in union with the Divine. Hence, contemplate on the Divine incessantly.

Never give scope for anxiety or worry. Do not think, “Will I pass in the examinations?” Under any circumstances, do not give chance for despair and despondency.

Do not have weak thoughts or negative attitude. Have faith in the Divine.

Sincere prayers to Him will help you achieve anything in life. Pray earnestly every day.

Take efforts to instil strong faith and devotion within you and share it with your fellow human beings.

Do your duty and face any situation with courage. Then, the result is bound to be good. That will make the Divine very happy.

Love is Divine. Live in love. He is always with you, in you, above you and around you.

- Divine Discourse, Jan 14, 2006.

Prayer alone makes life happy, harmonious and worth living in this universe.

How should we lead our lives, one day at a time?

The gold from which an anklet was made, can become the gold for a crown on the head of a deity in the temple, but it has to be melted in the crucible and beaten into shape.

All of you have heard of that deity with the flute. And what exactly is the flute? You must be the flute.

Let the breath of the Divine pass through you, making delightful music that melts hearts. Surrender yourself to Him; become hollow, inclination-less, egoless and desireless. Then, He Himself will come and pick you up caressingly and place you, the flute, to His lips and blow His sweet breath through you.

Allow Him to play whatever song He likes. Let your mind dwell ever on Him. Sanctify every word and deed by filling it with love for Him or whatever name and form you give to the Divine that you love.

- Divine Discourse, Sep 06, 1963.

The Divine is full of love. He has no ounce of hatred in Him. Live in love, for love, with love.
